A Voice from the Eastern Door

Niawen

To the People of Akwesasne,

In November, I was presented with the Department of National Defense’s Deputy Minister/Chief of the Defense Staff Excellence in Defense Award for Employment Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Reconciliation. This award would not have been possible without the incredible ongoing support that I have received from the people of Akwesasne. In my humble opinion, we share this award. You helped me learn about the Mohawk culture and about the community of Akwesasne. You patiently answered my many questions, freely offered your insight, and were always frank in your responses when I sought out guidance and advice. As a guest on your land, you have welcomed me into your community and into your homes with open arms, open hearts, and open minds; I am humbled by your warmth and hospitality. Together we have built a relationship based on trust and respect, a relationship that I value deeply. I am grateful for the experiences we have shared, and I am honored to have this chance to walk with you. I remain committed to my learning journey, and it is my sincere hope that the conversation we have started around reconciliation continues as we build a better tomorrow and a strong relationship.

Sincerely,

Darlene Bennett
