Highlights from the November 27 UCDSB Board of Trustees Meeting

Trustees with the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) met on Wednesday, November 27, 2024. Key items discussed in the public session are as follows.

Student Enrolment Update

UCDSB staff presented an enrolment update to trustees, highlighting a steady increase in student numbers across both elementary and secondary. This year’s Average Daily Enrolment (ADE) is projected at 27,965, reflecting a growth of 206 ADE (+0.7 per cent) compared to projections made in Spring 2024.

Regional trends highlight enrolment changes across UCDSB’s geographical areas. Data shows a net enrolment gain of 364 ADE between October 2023 and October 2024, indicating that new admissions outpaced withdrawals, including graduations.

As of October 2, 2024, the UCDSB had 3,088 new students, across all grades. Of those students, 1719 (56 per cent) are Junior Kindergarten students, 824 (26 per cent) are Senior Kindergarten to Grade 8 students, and 545 (17 per cent) are Grade 9-12 students.

The UCDSB’s enrolment growth underscores the district’s appeal to families relocating within Ontario, across Canada, and internationally. It also highlights the board’s commitment to meeting the needs of its growing student population.

Audit Committee Annual Report Approved

Trustee David McDonald, chair of the Audit Committee, presented the committee’s annual report. He noted that three of the four planned audits were completed, with one still underway. The audits completed were on the topics of school generated funds, workforce planning engagement, and strategic risk assessment. The audit that is currently in progress is around special education benchmarking.

Trustees approved this report to be submitted to the Ministry of Education.
