FRANCIS J. GARDNER

MASSENA – Francis J. Gardner, 80, of Jefferson Ave, unexpectedly passed away Monday, October 15, 2024 at Massena Hospital.

Francis was born in Ogdensburg on December 10, 1943, the son of the late Donald J. and Ruth (Cook) Gardner. He was raised in Morristown where he was a graduate of Morristown Central Schools and always proud of his Native American heritage. Following graduation in 1962, he entered the US Air Force proudly serving his country until his honorable discharge in 1966. On December 2, 1967, Francis married Mary Jane Wood at Notre Dame Church in Ogdensburg.

In 1967, Francis started at Alcoa, where they sent him to apprentice training to be a blacksmith. He continued there for over 40 years, retiring as a General Mechanic. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Catholic Church and member of the VFW, American Legion, and AMVETS. He enjoyed visits to the casino, playing bingo, and going shopping at the grocery store. Francis had a very generous spirit and would always help his neighbors and others in need.

Francis is survived by his loving wife, Mary Jane; his daughters, Dawn (Mike) Foster, Kerry Davis and Terry Thompson, all of Massena; his grandchildren, Breanna and Taylor Foster, and Makenzie Thompson; his sister, Donna (Jim) Wells of Gouverneur; his brothers, Louis John (Bonnie) Gardner of Morristown and Wayne Gardner of Florida; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved puppies, Pepper and TJ.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Ronald, Gene, Clint, and Dave Gardner.

Arrangements are under the care and guidance of the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena where friends may call on Monday 6-8:00 PM. A celebration of his life will be held November 9th 1-4:00 PM at the American Legion in Massena.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may consider memorial contributions to be made in his memory to the Massena Humane Society.
