The Akwesasne Boys and Girls Club main clubhouse experienced a fire on Wednesday, October 30, which started in and was contained to a maintenance room. As reported earlier, all children and staff were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Main Clubhouse located in Rooseveltown Road will remain closed until further notice.

All school-based Clubhouses will remain open to serve ABGC members, they are located at the St. Regis Mohawk School, and all three Ahkwesahsne Mohawk Board of Education schools – Kana:takon School, Tsi Snaihne School, and the Ahkwesahsne Mohawk School.

Indian Time contacted Jessica Cree-Jock, Director of the ABGC and she shared this update, “The fire on October 30th at the Main Clubhouse on Rooseveltown Road was contained to the maintenance closet and we are expected the building to be closed for several weeks for repairs. ABGC has temporarily relocated to the Akwesasne Business Center on Frogtown Road, with the administrative offices on the second floor and the temporary clubhouse in the lower building next to the animal society.”

The ABGC reopened the ‘Temporary Main Club’ on Frogtown Road to a reduced number of youths on Tuesday, November 12.

Cree-Jock added, “The ABGC would like to thank the Akwesasne Hogansburg Volunteer Fire Department, Bombay & Fort Covington Fire Departments and Saint Regis Tribal Police for their promptly response and the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe and Akwesasne Housing Authority for their support through this transition.”

This is a developing story and will be updated.
