Lacrosse Scrimmage – Akwesasne vs. The Netherlands

On Sunday, September 15 Akwesasronon enjoyed an exhilarating afternoon of lacrosse at the Travis Solomon Memorial Lacrosse Box at Generations Park. Akwesasne's finest lacrosse players – both men and women faced off against the Netherlands' talented box lacrosse teams.

The Netherlands – Dutch National Lacrosse team is coached by Hawhenawdies Neal Powless and instrumental in organizing the scrimmage and cultural exchange.

The women's scrimmage started at 12:30 p.m., followed by the men's showdown at 2:00 p.m.

The day was filled with fierce competition, sportsmanship, and plenty of fun.

The Dutch lacrosse team to the United States for the World Box Lacrosse Championship, will take place in Utica, NY, from September 20 to 29. Their preliminary program focuses not only on athletic performance but also on cultural exchange and friendship.

Their journey began this past Sunday with a visit to Akwesasne, the Mohawk territory. Here, they participated in a cultural exchange and play a match against the local team.

"This encounter offers us a unique opportunity to better understand the local culture and measure our athletic skills against a team with a deeply rooted lacrosse tradition. We will partake in the same ceremonies that took place 411 years ago, further connecting us to the historical roots of the sport."

On Wednesday, September 18: the Dutch team traveled to a match in Oneida, then on to Onondaga, where they will train in their arena and play yet another match.

According to the team manager, "Cultural exchange is also central here, and we look forward to learning more about the rich history and traditions of the Onondaga community. These encounters are of great value to us, as lacrosse originates from the indigenous peoples of North America."

On Friday, September 20, the official opening ceremony of the World Championship will take place, followed by their first match against the host country, the United States. This promises to be an exciting and well-attended game.

On Tuesday, September 24: the Dutch Team will participate in a match and Friendship Ceremony Oneida.

On Tuesday, the women's match against Haudenosaunee will be played at the Mary C. Winder Community Center, and there will be a friendship ceremony between the two countries. This is another special opportunity to strengthen the bond between our communities.
