A Voice from the Eastern Door

September is Suicide Prevention Month

September marks National Suicide Prevention Month – a month to remember the lives lost to suicide, the millions of people who have struggled with suicidal ideation, and acknowledge the individuals, families, and communities that have been impacted. It is also a time to raise awareness about this urgently important crisis, discuss suicide prevention and to share messages of hope.

Suicidal thoughts, much like mental health conditions, can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or background. Suicidal thoughts, although common, should not be considered normal and often indicate more serious issues.

On Saturday, September 7th, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe Mental Health Program will host a Suicide Awareness Walk at Generations Park from 4pm to 7pm.

Feel free to email a picture of a loved one you lost by suicide and would like to be remembered at this event. Please send photos to [email protected]

The event includes a Candle Light Ceremony, walking laps in remembrance of those you’ve lost while obtaining information from our local resources who assist with suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention. Therapists and other mental health supports will be available. If you are comfortable, you’re welcome to share your story. Refreshments and light snacks provided.

Let’s use this month to shift public perception, spread hope and share vital information to people affected by suicide. The goal is to ensure that individuals, friends and families have access to the resources they need to discuss suicide prevention and to seek help.
