A Voice from the Eastern Door
Hogansburg: Alice Margaret Chapman, age 87, of 1214 State Route 37, passed away early Thursday morning, August 1, 2024, in the emergency room at Massena Hospital.
Alice was born at home on October 15, 1936, in Hogansburg, the daughter of the late John and Josephine (Herne) Cook. She attended the Mohawk school on the reservation and Bombay High School but left before graduating. She married and eventually moved to Pennsylvania in 1961. After her husband left, she was a single mom raising her 5 kids, and working hard, eventually having enough to buy her first house on Greenbriar Rd (Levittown, PA). When her daughter was in high school and planning on going to college, she decided to get her GED (so she could graduate first and show how important an education was to her children) and then attended Bucks County Community College, all while she was working.
She worked at Fischer & Porter in Warminster, PA for almost 30 years until her first retirement as an Electronic Technician, then moved back to the reservation where she bought her next house. She worked at the Mohawk Bingo Palace and Akwesasne Mohawk Casino until her second retirement.
Alice was a fierce and loving mother to her children, Crystal of Hogansburg, Lee (Joyce) of Rooseveltown, Scott (Kathy) of Webb City, MO, Charles of Massena, Dale of Langhorne, PA, and her chosen son John of Hogansburg (she became his legal guardian when his mother Beth died in a car accident, and his father Charles was disabled in the same accident). She took great pride in her grandchildren, Christina, Amanda, Scott, Timothy, Jessica, and Daniel; and her great-grandchildren Sterling, Greyson, Mary Jane, Dahlila, Aubree, Maybree (Bree), Avery, Riley, Ezra, Vincent, and Eva.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Roberta Garrow and Linda Cooke: and her brothers Ronald Cooke and David (Duffy) Cooke. She is survived by her sisters, Arlene Cooke, Nora Ruthig, and Verna Slingerland, and her brothers Joseph Cooke, Richard Cooke, Adrian Cooke and Dean Cooke. She is also survived by various loving in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and the “Greenbriar gang (Levittown, PA)”.
She was a communicant at St Regis Catholic Church and a member of the Akwesasne Death Benefits group. She enjoyed playing CKON radio bingo, listening to Country music (and dancing until a few years ago), and bingo and slots at the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino. She read constantly, did crossword puzzles, was a proud and loyal fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies, and if there was enough time in the day, she went shopping!
Friends called at Donaldson’s Funeral Home in Massena on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 from 4:00 until time of service at 6:00 pm. Burial will take place at a later date.
