Jake William "Tahakie" LaFrance

AKWESASNE - Jake William "Tahakie" LaFrance, 78, of 32 Lighthouse Road, Cornwall Island, began his journey back to the Spirit World on July 18, 2024 after a lengthy illness at Iakhihsohtha Lodge and resting at Tsiionkwanonsote Long Term Care Facility, both facilities offering him the highest standard of tender loving care.

Jake was born January 15, 1946 at home in Akwesasne, the son of the late James "Boxy" and Harriet (Laughing) LaFrance. He attended the St. Regis Mohawk School and was a 1964 graduate of Salmon River Central High School. Jake attended BOCES in Malone, where he completed a 4 year millwright apprenticeship. Jake is a decorated Vietnam veteran who proudly served his country in the US Army 145th Combat Aviation Brigade after high school from 1965-1971.

Following his honorable Army discharge, Jake found employment as an Ironworker in Locals 711 and 440, later to begin a 30 year career as a millwright at ALCOA in Massena, NY. After retirement, Jake became a part-time bus driver for the Mohawk Indian Housing Corporation, assisting seniors with errands and other daily living tasks. During his time as an Ironworker, Jake met the love of his life, Brenda Cook, in Rochester, NY. On April 4, 1970 they were married at the St. Regis Catholic Church and celebrated their 54th anniversary in 2024.

Jake enjoyed many hobbies, including watching and playing sports. In high school Jake played football, later on taking a shine to softball playing with the Quebec Heaters, Snye Bums, and the American Legion Post 1479. He was a dedicated volunteer at the Snye Recreation for many years. He also enjoyed crossword and sudoku puzzles, playing bingo and cards, going to the movies, cooking (and eating!), reading, birdwatching, listening to music, and walking. His most cherished time was spent with family, especially his grandchildren and new great grandson.

Jake is survived by his loving wife, Brenda; their children, Margaret (David), and John (Heather), of Akwesasne; their grandchildren, Rarihwenhawi 'Wishe' (Leah) of Ballston Spa, Drayden George and Makayleigh LaFrance of Akwesasne; their great grandson, Logan 'Tahakie' LaFrance; his sisters, Carole Ross and Valerie Garrow, both of Akwesasne; his goddaughter, Lydia Garrow of Akwesasne; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Jake was predeceased by his sister, Theresa, two brothers, Alex and Phillip, and two brothers-in-law, Robert Garrow and Larry Ross.

Arrangements are under the care and guidance of the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where friends may call Monday, July 22, 2024 from 2:00 -4:00 pm and 7:00 – 9:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, 11:00 am at St. Regis Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the Veteran's Section of St. Joseph's Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jake's name to the Snye Recreation Hall, the American Legion Post 1479, and the American Legion Post 1479 Auxiliary Fund
