A Voice from the Eastern Door

Celebrate Local Food During This Year's National Farmers Market Week!

The theme of this year's celebration is "Farmers Markets Are Third Place Makers," meaning local markets create spaces beyond home and work for community building, cultural exchange, healthy living, and economic growth. Local markets enhance the quality of life for everyone in our community.

The local Akwesasne Farmer's Market is open from 10 AM to 1 PM and happens every Saturday at Generations Park. The following dates are July 27, August 10, August 24, September 7, September 21, October 5 and the last farmers market for the 2024 season is on October 19th.

As part of the festivities the farmers markets in Canton, Potsdam, and Gouverneur will feature performances from the Farmers Market Music Series and the GardenShare market management tent will feature an array of fun activities for kids.

2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the Canton Farmers Market and in honor of the occasion the market will feature a screen-printing tent run by the St. Lawrence County Arts Council on Friday, August 9th from 9am - 2pm. SLC Arts will have t-shirts and tote bags for sale but attendees are invited to bring articles of clothing to be screen printed as well!

GardenShare will also be holding a Farmers Market Photo Contest for the duration of August! Attendees at any of our county's farmers markets are encouraged to submit photos of your local market, recent or from the past! We will be holding a public vote to find our community's favorite photo, and the winning submitter will receive a prize! Follow GardenShare on Facebook to get the submission link when the contest goes live at the beginning of August.

Farmers Market Week is an opportunity to experience everything our region has to offer from peak summer produce, unique vendors, and community activities. By directly supporting local farmers, artisans, and producers, consumers contribute to a sustainable and resilient local food system while forging meaningful connections with the people who grow and produce their food.

The Canton – Potsdam Farmers Market Music Series is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by the St. Lawrence County Arts Council.
