Kana:takon District Chief Cindy Francis-Mitchell Appointed Acting Grand Chief
On Tuesday, July 16, the former Grand Chief of the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne announced that District Chief Cindy Francis-Mitchell was appointed to serve as Acting Grand Chief. Acting Grand Chief Francis-Mitchell will fulfill the Grand Chief's daily duties and ensure our leadership and community services continue until the next Council is sworn in.
MCA 2024 elections are under review as the Office of the Akwesasne Election Appeal Board sorts out the numerous appeals. The OAEAB is held two public hearings. One was held on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, and another on Wednesday, July 17 Date from 5:15 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at the Kanonhkwa'tsheri:io Health Facility – Atrium.
According to OAEAB, "The hearing is part of the Board's commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent election process, with mechanisms in place to address any issues or disputes that may arise. The law mandates confidentiality, impartiality, and integrity from all involved in the election process, including candidates, electoral officers, and appointed observers."
The community is invited to attend the hearing to witness the proceedings. The Akwesasne Election Law includes provisions for voter eligibility, candidate eligibility, nomination procedures, advance polls, voting procedures, counting procedures, official statements, appeals procedure, swearing-in, removal/vacancy from council, by-elections, amendments, penalties, and various schedules for forms and guidelines related to the election process.
As outgoing Grand Chief, Abram Benedict stated, "It's been an incredible honor to serve as your Grand Chief for the past 9 years, and as an elected leader in Akwesasne for 18 years. Your trust and support have been the driving force behind our collective progress and achievements. Together we have achieved so much!
While I assume my new role as Ontario Regional Chief, I will carry with me the lessons and experiences from our community. I remain committed to supporting Akwesasne and all Ontario First Nations in our shared vision for a prosperous future."
