Akwesasne Election Appeal Board to Hold Public Hearing

Akwesasne, July 11, 2024 – The Akwesasne Election Appeal Board, in accordance with the Akwesasne Election Law, will be conducting a public hearing. This law, enacted by the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne on April 8, 2024, and effective from June 3, 2024, upholds the self-determination and jurisdiction rights of the Mohawks of Akwesasne as recognized in the Constitution of Canada.

The hearing is part of the Board’s commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent election process, with mechanisms in place to address any issues or disputes that may arise. The law mandates confidentiality, impartiality, and integrity from all involved in the election process, including candidates, electoral officers, and appointed observers.

Date: (Today) Tuesday, July 16, 2024 and Wednesday, July 17, 2024

Time: 5:15 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Location: Kanonkwatsheriio Health Facility – Atrium

The community is invited to attend the hearing to witness the proceedings. The Akwesasne Election Law includes provisions for voter eligibility, candidate eligibility, nomination procedures, advance polls, voting procedures, counting procedures, official statements, appeals procedure, swearing-in, removal/vacancy from council, by-elections, amendments, penalties, and various schedules for forms and guidelines related to the election process.

Office of the Akwesasne Election Appeal Board Rules of Conduct for Public Hearing

1. Respect for the Process

All attendees must respect the procedures and guidelines of the public hearing.

Interruptions of speakers or proceedings are not permitted.

2. Orderly Conduct

Attendees should conduct themselves in an orderly manner at all times.

No shouting, use of profanity, or other disruptive behavior will be tolerated.

3. Speaking Time

Each speaker will be allotted a specific amount of time to speak, which must be adhered to.

Speakers must conclude their remarks within the allotted time.

4. Non-Discrimination

The public hearing is a discrimination-free zone. No comments or actions that discriminate against any individual or group will be allowed.

5. Use of Recording Devices

No recording devices may be used

6. Decorum

Attendees must dress appropriately for the solemnity of the proceedings.

Eating, drinking, or smoking in the hearing room is prohibited.

7. Compliance with Officials

Attendees must follow all instructions given by the hearing officials.

Failure to comply with these rules may result in removal from the hearing.

8. Exit and Entry

Attendees should minimize entry and exit movements during the proceedings to avoid disturbances.
