MASSENA – Over 150 students, including two dozen from Akwesasne, graduated from Massena High School in a ceremony held at Mike Nichols Field on Friday night, June 28.
The bleachers, plus more chairs set up on the football field, held an audience of hundreds.
The ceremony started shortly before sunset and was dark by the time the graduates lined up to receive their diplomas. Joanne Jocko presented each of the Akwesasne classmates with a feather in recognition of making it to a significant milestone.
The Akwesasne grads either wore traditional regalia or a purple sash with the Haudenosaunee flag emblem.
Superintendent of Schools Ronald Burke urged the class as they move forward to "remember the importance of civil discourse and acting community involved."
"Through such dialogue you can foster understanding and you can bring change."
Salutatorian Tucker Siddon and valedictorian Christine Grant each gave an address to the Class of '24.
"All we have is every moment," Grant said. "The lasts pave way for a lifetime of firsts: first real job, first day of college, first real bills ... being present in every moment is the key to a plentiful life."
