Clanology

Clan System of the Iroquois

Continued from last week.

Rotikwaho - Wolf Clan

The people of the Wolf Clan are usually aggressive. They tend to respond almost instantly to things in their life. They are a very honest and straight forward people. In this regard most Wolf Clan people are not generally thought to possess diplomatic characteristics. The Wolf Clan will say what is on their mind without much hesitation or regard to the feelings of anyone. If you would like to have an argument just for the sake of arguing, no matter what subject, just go see the people of the Wolf Clan and you will instantly have your wish fulfilled.

The Wolf Clan people seem not to believe what is told to them at first. They always cross examine, but once satisfied they are workers and believers. They will finish the job with great determination. It is hard to be humble if you are of the Wolf Clan. This generally seems to be true.

The Wolf Clan people are workers and doers. Wolf Clan people are not particularly close to one another. They seem to not really get along, but mess with one of them and they all instantly unite.

In Akwesasne the Wolf Clan are the most populous and strongest clan. They have many people who speak the Mohawk language, sing the songs of the Four Sacred Rituals, and can recite the spiritual speeches of the Four Sacred Rituals. If ever the Akwesasne Mohawks lose their beliefs and traditions, the Wolf Clan people will probably be the last to do so. In the Mohawk Nation the Wolf Clan people have three principle Rotiianehson titles and they are as follows:

Sheranho:wane, which means “a type of big tee”

Teionhehkwen, which means “food plants or sustenance of life”

Orenhre’ko:wa which means “ A type of big bird”

Roti nehsi:io – Snipe Clan

The Akwesasne people who belong to the Snipe Clan are originally either Onondagas, Cayugas, or Senecas. Most likely they are from the Onondagas.

The Snipe Clan do have a number of principal clan Rotiianehson titles. The titles are held by the Onondaga Nation, The Seneca Nation and the Cayuga Nation.

The following is observed of the people belonging to the Snipe Clan. They are always busy or involved in something. They are usually not lazy. They are sometimes moody. Most of the time the mood is of a joyous nature. It is said that the Snipe Clan people are a noisy bunch. They are very alert and full of energy. They take great interest in almost all things; so much so that they have a hard time to complete any one project.

If a Snipe Clan person sees a group of people busy doing something they will enthusiastically invite themselves and become a part of it. They will put their whole heart into the project as if there was no tomorrow. If they see someone doing something else, they will leave what they are doing and will jump into another project, with great enthusiasm. They will do the same thing over and over again.

The Snipe Clan people are usually positive-thinking people. They do have a temper that is kind of quick at times but does not last long. The Snipe Clan people are good conversationalists. They usually know enough about everything to be very interesting.
