Call Out for Three Community Trustees

Deadline Date for Applications: Monday, June 17, 2024, at 12:00 noon

Applications will be taken from interested Members seeking an appointment as a Community Trustee under the Mohawks of Akwesasne Community Settlement Trust (“the Trust”)

Seeking: three (3) Community Trustees

Term: four (4) year term

Honorarium: honorarium provided as per Schedule “C” of the Trust

Eligibility List: an eligibility list may be established for appointment of replacement Community Trustees

Eligibility Criteria for Community Trustee:

• Be at least eighteen (18) years of age.

• Be a member enrolled on the Akwesasne Membership Roll and not a probationary member.

• Not have been removed as a Community Trustee within the previous twelve (12) month period.

• Not be an undischarged bankrupt or insolvent, as defined in the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act (Canada), or in any jurisdiction in the United States of America.

• Not have been adjudged or declared to be mentally incompetent or incapable of managing their own affairs by a court of competent jurisdiction.

• Must have obtained or be willing to obtain, within the first nine (9) months of appointment, introductory level trustee accreditation from the National Aboriginal Trust Officers Association of Canada (NATOA) or other qualified training centre.

• Not be a member of Council, or if so, be willing to resign from Council.

• Within the last ten (10) years, not have been convicted of an offence under the Criminal Code (Canada), or the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (Canada) or an offence under the laws in the United States of America, subject to limited exceptions.

• Must agree to sign the Trustee’s Certificate in Schedule “B” of the Trust, indicating an agreement to be bound by the terms of the Trust and to faithfully carry out the duties of Community Trustee.

Factors to be Considered:

• Has the applicant demonstrated common sense in connection with their day-to-day activities in the community?

• Does the applicant possess any special skill or knowledge which may be of benefit to the Trustees?

• Does the applicant possess the respect of other Members in the community?

• Has the applicant made contributions to the betterment of the Mohawks of Akwesasne and the community?

• Does the applicant have the ability to communicate in the Mohawk language?
