POTSDAM – SUNY Potsdam sophomore men's lacrosse player Saka Thompson (Akwesasne/Salmon River) has been named a Division III Honorable Mention All-American by USA Lacrosse Magazine.
All-Americans were chosen by the magazine's staff and contributors with input from coaches and conferences across the country. Thompson is the 10th All-American in program history.
Thompson established himself as one of the nation's best goalies this season. He earned SUNYAC Defensive Player of the Week four times.
The sophomore ranks fourth in the nation and led the SUNYAC in save percentage with .632 and is 10th in the country with a conference-leading goals-against-average of 8.14. In two seasons, Thompson has won 12 contests, placing him eighth on the program's wins list. He was named first team All-SUNYAC on May 7 and was selected as SUNY Potsdam's Male Athlete of the Year at the Maxcy Awards Banquet on Thursday.
Thompson played a crucial part in the Bears reaching the 10-win plateau for the fifth time in program history and reaching the SUNYAC Championship for the second time ever.
Thompson will now wait so see if he repeats the honor with the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) later this month.
The Bears were 10-6, 4-3 in the SUNYAC, this season. They reached the playoffs for the 15th time in program history. They upset SUNY Cortland on the road in the semifinals to reach the title contest. The victory ended a 32-game losing streak to the Red Dragons, the Bears first win in the series since 1999.
