'Rocks down Raiders in softball, SR girls take two close wins in lax

Friday, May 3, boys lacrosse, Massena 13 Ogdensburg 7: The Raiders secured a 9-6 lead at halftime and showcased an impenetrable defense in the second half, with goaltender Owen Converse making 10 saves and allowing only one goal.

Drew Smutz, with three goals and three assists, Myles Cook, with three goals, and Duffa Thompson, with one goal and three assists, led the Raiders’ offensive charge. Dom Murtaugh’s two goals were crucial, especially his second, which came just 12 seconds after Theodore Hewko narrowed the gap to 11-7 with OFA’s lone goal of the second half.

Murtaugh’s decisive goal followed his successful control of the draw and a solo rush on goal. Miles Cook wrapped up the scoring with a skillful over-the-shoulder flick, set up by Smutz in front of the net. Andrew Bertram, guarding the goal for the Devils, made eight saves.

Thursday, May 2, softball, Salmon River 12 Massena 11: Salmon River secured a close victory over Massena in Fort Covington, with Mataya Arquette leading the Shamrocks’ offense with three hits, while Lindsey Durant contributed two hits and drove in three runs.

Joining in the offensive effort, Kamry Thompson and Jemma Jacobs both recorded two hits for the Shamrocks.

Additionally, Durant excelled on the mound, earning the win and striking out eight batters.

Thursday, May 2, girls lacrosse, Salmon River 11 Canton 10: In a showdown between division leaders in Fort Covington, Ariyah LaFrance’s overtime goal, assisted by Tallis Tarbell, propelled the Shamrocks to victory over the Golden Bears.

LaFrance contributed two goals in total as Salmon River claimed sole possession of first place with a 10-0 record, handing Canton its first league defeat. Tarbell led the scoring for Salmon River with five goals, while Azalea Lazore added three goals. Jianna Lazore contributed with a goal and four assists.

On the opposing side, Olivia Francey and Viv Coburn each scored four goals for Canton. Francey’s last three goals were crucial in forcing the game into overtime. Ella Mousaw and Amalia Pratti also found the net for the Bears.

Wednesday, May 1, baseball, Ogdensburg 8 Massena 6: OFA extended its winning streak in NAC Baseball to five games with a win against Massena.

Despite facing some challenges early on, junior pitcher Tyler Sovie managed to navigate through, conceding five runs to Massena in the first three innings. However, he found his stride and delivered a solid performance, keeping Massena scoreless in the last three innings of the 8-6 win.

The Devils secured their fifth consecutive NAC Central win by exploding with five runs in the fourth inning, followed by one in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Sovie, who also tripled in the seventh inning, contributed with a single in the fourth inning, alongside Lucca LaBella, Seth Sholette, Nicholi Ramsdell, and Haydin McDonald. LaBella singled twice and crossed the plate three times, while Dylan Sovie also singled.

For Massena, Taylor Mitchell singled twice, and Michael Herrick, Drake Love, and starting pitcher Connor Eastwood each added a single.

Wednesday, May 1, softball, Malone 6 Salmon River 5: The game began with Salmon River appearing dominant as starting pitcher Kamry Thompson efficiently handled the Huskies in the early innings, allowing the Shamrocks to establish an early lead. However, the game didn’t commence favorably for the Huskies as starting pitcher Brooke LaPlant walked the first two Salmon River batters, Lindsey Durant and Mataya Arquette. The Shamrocks capitalized on opportunities to advance bases whenever the ball eluded the Franklin Academy catcher, resulting in a 3-0 lead for Salmon River in the opening frame.

Salmon River extended their lead in the second inning when Jemma Jacobs started with a hit, followed by Sophia Angus and Lindsey Durant also hitting safely, resulting in Jacobs crossing home plate, giving the Shamrocks a 4-0 advantage.

The Huskies began to rally in the bottom of the third inning. Peyton Welch initiated with a leadoff walk, and despite two subsequent outs, Grace St. Mary delivered an RBI single followed by another RBI single by Whitney St. Hilaire, narrowing the gap to 4-2.

Salmon River added another run in the top of the fifth inning as Lindsey Durant’s single kickstarted the offense, eventually leading to a 5-2 lead after Mylee Lazore’s fielder’s choice brought Durant home.

The Huskies promptly responded in the bottom of the fifth inning, with Natalie Marlow drawing a leadoff walk and later scoring on Grace St. Mary’s RBI single, reducing the deficit to 5-3.

Franklin Academy’s pitcher, Brooke LaPlant, shut down the Shamrocks in the sixth and seventh innings, setting the stage for the Huskies’ last-inning comeback attempt, still trailing by two runs.

Although Salmon River’s Kamry Thompson secured the first out, the Huskies fought back. Natalie Marlow kickstarted the rally with a base hit, leading to a succession of hits. Brooke LaPlant singled, and Grace St. Mary, who drove in three of Franklin Academy’s runs, delivered another crucial base hit to bring in Marlow, tying the score at 5-5.

With LaPlant now at third base, representing the potential winning run, tension mounted as every pitch became critical. The game reached its climax when Hillary Baker stepped up to bat. Baker’s deep fly ball to centerfield dropped far enough for St. Mary to score the winning run, sealing Franklin Academy’s remarkable 6-5 comeback victory.

For the Shamrocks, Lindsey Durant went 2 for 3 with a walk and two runs scored, Kamry Thompson went 1 for 3 with a walk and a run scored while also striking out 9 batters on the mound, Jemma Jacobs went 2 for 3 and scored a run, and Mataya Arquette walked and scored a run.

For the Huskies, Grace St. Mary went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, Natalie Marlow went 1 for 2 with two runs scored, Whitney St. Hilaire went 1 for 2 with two walks and a run scored, and Peyton Welch walked and scored a run.

Tuesday, April 30, softball, Massena 30 Ogdensburg 15: Despite the Blue Devils’ impressive 12 hits, the Red Raiders took advantage of walks and errors to secure a victory in the NAC Central Division. It was a game that saw 45 runners total from both teams reaching home plate. Ainsley Cromie played a significant role, hitting two doubles and a single, while Julia Dennis contributed with three singles.

Chloe Best added to the offensive effort with a double and two singles, Emily Regan tripled and singled, and Taylor Dashnaw doubled twice for Ogdensburg Free Academy. Additionally, Brooke Barr and Marisa Lovely each contributed with a double and a single.

Monday, April 29, boys lacrosse, Massena 11 Plattsburgh 4: Takaronhiotakie Thompson netted a hat trick with an assist as Massena scored eight unanswered goals in the home field win.

Raider Drew Smutz assisted five goals. Ronan Oakes and Myles Cook each recorded two goals and two assists.

Alek Duprey scored twice for Plattsburgh.

Monday, April 29, boys lacrosse, Salmon River 15 St. Lawrence 3: Two goals with a helper came off the respective sticks of Alex Derlormier, Treven Seymour and Taylor Mitchell in the NAC game at Brasher Falls.

Rohatiio Francis scored a pair of goals for the Shamrocks. Xavier Delormier stopped eight shots in nets.

Josh Allen scored twice for St. Lawrence.
