A Voice from the Eastern Door
MALONE – Malone's thriving art community is honored to host Melanie Yazzie, an internationally acclaimed printmaker, painter, and sculptor, as the featured artist in The Thrive Project's inaugural artist-in-residence program. Ms. Yazzie invites art enthusiasts and students alike to delve into the heart of her Diné (Navajo) cultural heritage from March 26th to March 28th.
In this exclusive program, school students will have the unique opportunity to be immersed in the multifaceted world of printmaking, painting, and sculpting, guided by Melanie's expertise and passion for creating beauty and harmony. The artist-in-residence initiative is part of the month-long celebration of SWAN (Support Women's Art Now) and is generously supported by Adirondack for Kids.
As a captivating addition to the program, Melanie Yazzie will present a special event on March 28th at the Downtown Artist Cellar from 5 to 7pm. This intimate gathering offers a unique opportunity to engage with the artist herself, gaining insights into her creative process, cultural inspirations, and the transformative power of art.
Melanie Yazzie's work draws upon her rich Diné (Navajo) cultural heritage, embodying the Diné dictum "walk in beauty" by creating art that reflects beauty and harmony. As an artist, she serves as an agent of change, encouraging others to explore social, cultural, and political phenomena shaping the contemporary lives of Native peoples in the United States and beyond.
Hailing from Denver, Colorado, Ms. Yazzie uses her extensive travels around the world to connect with other indigenous peoples. Her experiences in New Zealand, the Arctic, the Pueblos in the Southwest, and with indigenous peoples in Russia have been the impetus for continued dialogue about Indigenous cultural practices, language, song, story-telling, and survival.
Melanie Yazzie's work has been exhibited worldwide, with pieces in prestigious collections such as the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, and the Museum of Contemporary Native Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She has been featured in notable publications, including Focus Magazine, Santa Fe, the Los Angeles Times, and the New Zealand Herald.
With over 500 group and solo exhibitions combined, Ms. Yazzie creates prints, sculptures, paintings, and mixed media works. Her portfolio can always be explored at the Glenn Green Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
