Recent Massena and Salmon River games saw the Raiders beat Malone in boy’s hockey and Chateaugay in girls basketball. Meanwhile, the Shamrocks tied with Ogdensburg in the rink and lost to Hermon-Dekalb on the court.
Here is a summary of recent games:
Saturday, Jan. 27, girl’s basketball, Gouverneur 56 Massena 30 – Gouverneur controlled the contest with defense to stay on game.
Megan Firnstein and Madison LaDuke led Massena with nine and eight points. Other scoring came from Makenna Cameron with three points, Shelby Goeke with two points, Sophia Greco with three, Emma Pullock with two and Riana Baxter with another three points.
Courtney Forsythe’s 16 points led a 10-play winning offense and Meredith Bush and Renisa Richards tallied 10 and seven. Other scoring came from Chloe Smith with two points, Caitlyn Storie, Electra Fitzgerald and Rylin Martin-McIntyre with four points each, Mae Cummings and Ashtyn Besaw with three points apiece. Gabi Free connected for a free throw.
Friday, Jan. 26, girl’s basketball, Massena 74 Salmon River 37 – In Massena, the Raiders established a 25-18 halftime lead and then solidified their control with a 23-11 surge in the third quarter.
Meghan Firnstein led the Massena offense with 20 points in a well-distributed scoring effort. Sophia Greco followed closely with 19 points, while Makenna Cameron and Madison LaDuke both contributed 10 points each. Emma Pollack added eight points, Riana Baxter scored three, and Shelby Goeke chipped in with two.
For the Shamrocks, Taya Ransom was the lead scorer with 16 points, accompanied by Kaidence Sunday with 11 points and Heavon Thompson with four. Ariyah LaFrance, Shania Stewart, and Rhianna Thomas each finished with two points.
Friday, Jan. 26, boy’s hockey, Ogdensburg 3 Salmon River 3 (OT) – In Ogdensburg, the Blue Devils held a 3-1 lead heading into the third period before the Shamrocks mounted a comeback to force the game into overtime.
Carter Johnson ignited the Salmon River offense, scoring a shorthanded goal and later adding a power play goal with 4:21 remaining in regulation. The power play goal was set up by Dylan Johnson and Kahontiio Lazore. Dylan Johnson also scored the other goal, with an assist from Casey Jacobs in the middle of the third period.
Ethan Gibson made 33 saves for the Shamrocks, while Ty Jacobs recorded 45 stops for OFA. Also, for OFA, Haydin McDonald (with one assist), Nathan Irvine, and Lorenzo Rand contributed the goals, while Aiden O’Neil and Brooks Garvey provided individual assists.
Friday, Jan. 26, girls basketball, Gouverneur 56 Massena 30 – Megan Firnstein scored nine points to lead Massena. Courtney Forsythe netted a game-high 16 points and Meredith Bush contributed 10 points to pace the Wildcats past the Raiders in an NAC Central Division game on Saturday.
Tuesday, Jan. 23, boys hockey, Massena 2 Malone 0 – Drew Smutz and Carter King each scored for the Raiders in the NAC Division I home victory.
Cory Monacelli, Houston Johnson and Jacob Baillageron all tallied assists on the Massena goals. Nick Linstad made 16 saves and earned a shutout win. Treviyn Deuyour made 28 saves for the Huskies.
Smutz netted the only goal the Division I leading Raiders would need 6:42 into the game off an assist from Monacelli. After a scoreless second period, King finished off a play set up by Johnson and Baillageron with 8:19 left in regulation to close out the scoring.
Tuesday, Jan. 23, girls basketball, Potsdam 44 Salmon River 24 – At Fort Covington, the Sandstoners (5-9, 3-6) methodically built a 27-14 halftime advantage and then extended their lead with a decisive 9-2 run in the third quarter.
Kaidance Sunday led the Shamrocks (1-10, 0-9) with 10 points, while Taya Ransom contributed eight, Shania Stewart scored four, and Heavon Thompson added two.
Cathryn Todd led the Potsdam effort with a game-high 21 points. Jasmine McKnight scored 11 points, Emma Fields contributed seven, Lucy VanLeuven added four, and Reagan White scored one.
Monday, Jan. 22, girls basketball, Massena 39 Chateaugay 27 – At Massena, the Raiders started strong with a 10-1 run in the first quarter and secured the victory by outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 9-2 in the fourth.
Madison LaDuke led the winning effort with a game-high 15 points, followed by Sophia Greco with nine, Meghan Firnstein with eight, Makenna Cameron with four, and Riana Baxter with three.
Chateaugay’s Kaelyn Morgan topped her team’s scoring with 10 points, while Mary Leonard contributed six, and Maddie McComb added five. Avery McDonald and Irelynn Laplante each finished with three.
Monday, Jan. 22, boys basketball, Heuvelton 66 Massena 59 (OT) – The Bulldogs faced a 12-point deficit in the third quarter, and in the fourth, they traded the lead with the Raiders until Rhys Brossoit calmly sank three free throws, resulting in a 51-51 tie with 1:04 left in regulation. Isreal Paradise extended the HCS lead to 53-51 with a score off a Cam Johnson pass, but the Raiders’ Brad Barnes evened the score with two free throws. The game remained deadlocked at 53-53, pushing it into overtime.
Landyn Ashlaw opened the scoring in overtime with a deep three-pointer, and from that point on, the Bulldogs never relinquished the lead. Paradis added a putback for a 60-56 lead, but Colin Patterson’s diving steal and shuffle pass to Taylor Mitchell for a layup brought the Raiders back. The Bulldogs responded with a defensive standout play, as Brossoit intercepted a pass, leading to two free throws for a 62-59 advantage. Paradise then sealed the victory with two more free throws after a defensive rebound, securing a 64-59 lead with 15.9 seconds remaining.
In a well-balanced offensive effort that often flowed through him at the high post, Tacchino contributed 18 rebounds, four blocked shots, and nine points. Brossoit went a perfect 7-7 at the foul line, leading the team with 17 points, along with four assists and three steals. Landyn Ashlaw knocked down four three-pointers for a 14-point performance, matching Camden Johnson, who made 4 out of 5 free throws and distributed three assists.
Paradise scored six of his 12 points in overtime and grabbed six rebounds. Massena’s Colin Patterson led all scorers with 19 points, showcasing jump shots and tough inside conversions, while Taylor Mitchell tallied 18 points, including 11 in the third quarter. Tapeni LaBrake and Brad Barnes contributed nine and eight points, respectively, followed by Chris Bouyea with three and Josh Peets with two.
Monday, Jan. 22, boys basketball, Hermon-Dekalb 56 Salmon River 46 – A 16-7 first quarter lead proved to be decisive as the Demons gained a second straight nonleague win. The Shamrocks’ Kavin Lazore scored 11 points in the fourth quarter to lead Salmon River with 12 points and Edward Jacobs and Tyler Leroux followed with seven and six points.
H-D’s Hunter Bouchey sparked the fast start with seven of his 18 points in the first quarter and Emery McQuade and Noah Locy each added 10. Also for H-D were Nolan Carr with two points, Gavin Walrath with three and Jeremy Carr with six.
