Choctaw Nation Launches Website That Promotes New Show 'Echo'

By Isaac White.

The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma (CNO) has proudly launched a new website to celebrate and explain its involvement in Marvel's latest five-part series, "Echo." This series is eagerly awaited for its representation of Choctaw culture, with the main character, Maya, being a member of the Choctaw Nation. The website is designed as a comprehensive resource for both tribal members and fans who are keen to learn more about the Echo series and the CNO's unique contributions to the Marvel Universe.

The site offers an in-depth look at CNO's history, traditions, and language, allowing visitors to understand the significance of the cultural symbols, practices, and beliefs integral to Echo's storyline. It's a portal to explore the depth and richness of the Choctaw culture as depicted in the series.

One of the website's highlights is the exclusive interviews with tribal leaders involved in the Echo project. These interviews provide insight into the collaborative effort between the CNO and Marvel Studios to ensure an authentic portrayal of Choctaw culture. Seth Fairchild, CNO Executive Director of Cultural Services, explained the motivation behind the initiative.

"This series will introduce many people around the world to different aspects of our culture. Stickball, the language, where we are as a modern-day Native American tribe. And when people see these things in the series, we wanted to provide a resource so if they had questions about our people that's exactly what this website is for," Fairchild stated in reporting by Fox 23.

From the outset, Choctaw experts in history, culture, and language were actively involved in shaping the portrayal of the Choctaw people in the series.

Fairchild shared, "I tell people all the time so often people come to us that they developed a series or a movie or a book and really what they are looking for is a tribe to sign off on it and say, 'Hey the way you represented the Choctaw culture is good' and move forward. Unfortunately, what we prefer is exactly what Marvel did was come to us at the front of the process and say, 'Hey we have this idea and the story we want to tell but it's your story, it's the story of your people and we want to involve you from the very beginning,' so it really was a collaborative effort from the beginning and they went above and beyond to make sure every aspect of our culture whether it was a language or a scene of a village hundreds of years ago it was historically accurate and authentic as possible," as reported by Fox 23.

The informational website delves into the methods and approaches Marvel Studios used to incorporate the Choctaw Nation into the planning and production of the show. It's noted that the Choctaw Cultural team worked closely with the studio to ensure all aspects of the series accurately represented the Nation's history and traditions.

"Echo" is notable for featuring Choctaw symbols, cultural clothing, and even the Choctaw language, with all five episodes being dubbed in Choctaw. The website also discusses the cultural significance and history of the games and symbols featured in the show.

Furthermore, the website hosts interviews with Choctaw members discussing their experience with the creation of the show and Marvel Studios' outreach to partner with the nation.

Audiences can watch Marvel's "Echo" series on Hulu and Disney+, which premiered on January 9. For more information about this unique collaboration between Disney, Marvel, and CNO, visit the Echo website at https://echo.choctawnation.com/.
