A Voice from the Eastern Door
North Fort Myers, Fla. - A skull discovered at a thrift shop in North Fort Myers is thought to be of Native American origin, as mentioned in a recent incident report.
Deputies from Lee County arrived at the Antique Mall located at 13871 N. Cleveland Ave in North Fort Myers. They were there to investigate a report of potential human remains being offered for sale.
Michelle Calhoun, a 41-year-old anthropologist from Sarasota, reported the skull, asserting its Native American origins.
Upon arrival, the officials spoke with Beth Meyer, 61, who manages and owns the store. Meyer explained that the skull was displayed for Halloween and was priced at $4000, as stated in the report.
Meyer informed the authorities that the skull was found about a year ago in a storage locker, located at 13701 Indian Paint Lane. She was unaware of its significance to the Native American community.
Calhoun, working for Archaeological Consultants in Sarasota, confirmed to the authorities her identification of the skull. Meyer also mentioned to various news outlets her belief in the skull’s authenticity, given her experience with fossils and bones.
In Florida, selling human remains is a first-degree misdemeanor. However, the sheriff’s office has not indicated any imminent legal action, describing the situation as non-suspicious.
The authorities playfully referenced the incident in a Facebook post on Saturday, calling it “not-so-humerus.”
Meyer mentioned that she and her business partner unknowingly acquired the skull in September 2022 when purchasing a storage unit from a man, as detailed in the reports.
