A Voice from the Eastern Door

U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development RA Alicka Ampry-Samuel Visits SRMT

Akwesasne – U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Regional Administrator Alicka Ampry-Samuel traveled to the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe in Akwesasne to meet with Tribal leaders and visit the Akwesasne Housing Authority in late October. She was joined on the visit by ONAP Eastern Woodlands Administrator Neil Whitegull, of the Chicago Regional Office. The visit included a tour of housing authority homes, a solar panel farm, and the site of future homes. HUD provides funding to federally recognized tribes through multiple HUD block grants and loan programs to assist with housing.

Regional Administrator Ampry-Samuel is the first Region II Regional Administrator to visit the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe. During her visit, the Tribe demonstrated the high value it places on community.

The U.S. HUD press release stated, "The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe is located on 21 square miles of land, bordered by New York towns and the Akwesasne Indian reserve to the north in the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario. The Tribe has 16,157 enrolled members. As a sovereign nation, the St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Council Chiefs deal exclusively with the United States in a government-to-government relationship. The Akwesasne Housing Authority is high-performing and currently manages approximately 160 homes for seniors, families, and veterans. The AHA is developing additional homeownership units to address the housing shortage and create homes for deserving tribal families."

RA Ampry-Samuel looks forward to continuing to be a resource to the Tribal Council, the Akwesasne Housing Authority, and the Saint Regis Mohawk people.
