Kawehno:ke Recreation Committee Donates Singing Dolls to AMS

The Kawehno:ke Recreation Committee (KRC) donated faceless, singing dolls to the Early Years classes at the Akwesasne Mohawk School (AMS). KRC members Lyn and Kuy Chaussi presented the dolls to every AMS Early Years class.

The dolls were made by Cheyenne Doxtator and the singing dolls sing in the Kanieńkehá:ka language. The dolls sing social dance songs and each doll has sings a different set of songs in their repertoire. The students were overjoyed with the dolls, quickly hugging them once they received them – an action which make the dolls sing!

Teacher Lazore had previously taught her students about cornhusks dolls and why they are faceless. Not planned, but in perfect timing, KRC bringing in faceless signing dolls was just wonderful for her students.

Principal Andrea Carpenter said, "The KRC is so supportive of this school. They donate items for recess, they donate to our student's food pantry and our student's food backpack program. They also donate to our rainy-day activities program. They lend a tremendous amount of support in terms of supplies needed to make a child's day at school just that much better."
