Akwesasne: James D. Oakes, 66, of Akwesasne, passed away on October 4, 2023.
James was born October 4, 1957 in Cornwall, Ontario, the son of John and Isabelle (Stady) Oakes. He attended school at St. Regis Village. James was an IronWorker for 39 years and a great carpenter who enjoyed fixing up many homes throughout the years.
James enjoyed painting, carpentry, and fishing in his free time.
James is survived by his children, Chanel Cook and Tyler Oakes, both of Akwesasne; his chosen children, Shawna Thomas (Sky Hawk), Jordan (Hanna) Thomas, and Lee (Julie) Thomas; his companion, Sharon Thomas of Akwesasne; his grandchildren, Nakia, Kohia, Neya, Mila, Kellan, Layla, Crew James, Isenenkweniosta, and Jordan Jr; his god-daughter, Kristie Oakes; his brothers, Joseph (Loretta) Oakes and Victor (Rhonda) Oakes, both of Akwesasne; his sisters, Lorraine Oakes of Akwesasne and Charlotte Oakes of Rochester, NY; his two close friends, Steph Square and Johnny Benedict; and his beloved dog, Bump.
He was predeceased by his siblings John Michael, Enos, Roy, Angus, Jackie, Mary Jane and Christine.
Friends were invited to call on Wednesday until Friday at 8:30 am at Akwesasne Homemakers in Snye. Funeral service will take place on Friday, 10:00 am at Homemakers followed by a burial in St. Lawrence Cemetery in St. Regis.
