A Voice from the Eastern Door
The Canada Border Services Agency Cornwall Port of Entry has provided an update to Akwesasne on upcoming construction work that will result in temporary lane closures and changes. The Cornwall POE will be upgrading the permanent speed bumps leading up to each primary inspection booth. The work will begin on Tuesday, October 10, 2023.
The construction work will require the temporary closure of lanes, beginning with lanes 4 and 5. CBSA will continue to have a lane designated for domestic traffic as well as four (4) Primary Inspection Booths (PIL) available at all times. This will be achieved by temporarily changing the roadway leading up to each PIL booth during the construction and having travelers entering lane 3 to be diverted to use lane 4 which will assist in expediting the vehicles crossing the Port of Entry and minimizing the impact to Akwesasne residents and people travelling from Cornwall Island.
The domestic lane will be moved to PIL Lane #1 while lane 5 is being worked on.
The construction will occur in the following order:
1.) Lane 4-5 (Mid-October starting Oct. 10)
2.) Lane 3-4 (Late October)
3.) Lane 1 (Mid-November)
Each set of lanes will be closed for a duration of 2.5 weeks for an anticipated overall project duration of 8 weeks.
