A Voice from the Eastern Door
The Akwesasne Freedom School began their new school year on August 23, 2023. Beginning with the Ohenton Karihwatehkwen, each teacher then began their welcoming ceremony as each teacher greeted and welcomed the parent(s) and their child(s) into their classroom. As AFS students attend year-round in six-week segments with a weeks break in-between, AFS students are now in their fifth week of school with their first break happening right around the corner.
Salmon River Central and Massena both started their new school year on Thursday, September 7, 2023.
Superintendent Dr. Stanley Harper welcomed families to the 2023-24 school year and delivered this message to parents and guardians, "As we begin the new school year, it is important for us to revisit our vision as a district. Here at Salmon River, we value Shamrock PRIDE. As I have previously communicated with you, our goal is to embody our vision of People Respecting Individuality, Diversity and Educational Achievement. Also, please partner with us to ensure all of our students are attending school every day (if students are not in school, they are not learning). At Salmon River, every child matters and every child belongs. We strive to make meaningful connections with all students, and I want you to know that this will continue into the new school year."
Superintendent Burke of Massena stated in a message to parents "It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2023-24 school year! With the sun setting just a bit earlier each day, we are gently reminded that the days of summer will soon give way to cool autumn breezes. These noticeable seasonal changes also serve to remind us that we are about to begin a new school year. It is with great excitement that I join the Massena Central School District team serving as your new Superintendent of Schools. It is an honor to step into a role that upholds a rich tradition of excellence in education, where a steadfast commitment to the growth and well-being of students take center stage. Together we will continue to shape the futures of our students and continue the standard of educational distinction that is the hallmark of this school community."
Alison Benedict, principal of the St. Regis Mohawk School had this message to share, "We welcome back all of our returning students and our many new students to the St. Regis Mohawk School. Our focus this year is on improving our attendance by 7%. We look forward to working closely with our parents to help us to achieve this goal. Parents can help by bringing students to school on time and everyday unless they are sick. We are asking that students refrain from bringing food in from take-out services because this extra stop many times makes students tardy. We serve breakfast until 10:00 each and every day and encourage our students to eat our school breakfasts and lunches. We hope by doing this, it will save parents both time and money in the morning."
