Two New Teams Added as Fall Athletics Season Begins at Salmon River

FORT COVINGTON – Another exciting fall athletics season is getting underway at Salmon River Central School District.

This year, the district’s Athletics Department is adding two new teams to help enhance and broaden the already successful athletics program it offers its students.

Building upon its early accomplishments from last year, Salmon River has added a Junior Varsity Football team to its athletics offerings. It comes one year after the district started a new Modified Football team, which officially brought the sport back to the district after at least four decades without it.

“There was a lot of interest last year as we kicked off the Modified Football team,” said Athletic Director Shawn Miller. “We are excited to see where this junior varsity team takes us and are looking forward to building our football program to a point where we can one day offer a varsity team, too.”

In addition, a Junior Varsity Girls Volleyball team will debut this school year. The J.V. team was added because of increased student demand for the sport. Girls will now have the option of joining Modified, Junior Varsity or Varsity Volleyball teams based on age and skill level.

The 2022-23 school year was a year of many achievements for student athletes at Salmon River. For a second year in a row, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) recognized Salmon River Central High School as a School of Excellence.

“We are very proud of all our student athletes and their coaches,” said Miller. “Our students understand the importance of being present both for their academics and for their teammates.”

Aside from football and volleyball, the district’s strong soccer program, along with Cross Country, will continue to be offered for both boys and girls.

Salmon River will also continue to merge with Malone Central School District to offer Girls Swimming to interested students.

“It is a priority for us to continue to offer a wide range of opportunities to our students,” said Superintendent Dr. Stanley Harper. “I am proud of the many academic and athletic achievements of our athletes, past and present, and I eagerly await the many successes to come!”
