A Voice from the Eastern Door

In Memory of Gloria Herne, Assistant Executive Director, SRMT

The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe offers its heartfelt and sincere condolences on the passing of long-time employee Gloria Herne. Gloria passed away on Friday, Seskeha/August 25th at her home in the warm embrace of her loving family.

Just this month, Gloria was recognized for 35 years of service to the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe. She held many positions within the tribal organization, and was especially proud of her 11 years as Assistant Executive Director.

Gloria first joined the Tribe in 1988 as a part-time receptionist within the Accounting Department. From there, she advanced to other roles as Payroll Clerk, Bookkeeper, Health Cost Analyst, Budget Analyst, and then to her most recent position as Assistant Executive Director within the Office of the Executive Director. She was involved in budgets and audits, and worked closely with the BIA Eastern Region office to ensure maximum benefit for the community.

Gloria served on the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) team during the COVID-19 State of Emergency and helped lead the Tribe's response during the pandemic. She helped the prioritization of federal COVID funding for the community. Gloria had a strong voice and sound logic that she brought to meetings with colleagues and community members.

Gloria was particularly proud of the progress at SRMT over the past decade, helping with policy improvements, infrastructure improvements, and making sure the needs of Akwesasne's vulnerable population were met to the best of our ability. She was an advocate of her staff and strong mentor to many who valued her counsel.

Outside of her work duties, Gloria volunteered for many years with the Akwesasne Holiday Helpers and countless fundraisers. Helping people was the most rewarding part of her work and what Gloria loved the most.

Gloria reflected on work in a 2018 interview. "The days here at the Tribe pass by very quickly; it doesn't feel like I've been here almost 30 years," she said. "I appreciate every day I come to work. It's truly been a pleasure to be able to work for, and serve the community that I love."

To honor the countless contributions Gloria made to our community in her lifetime, the tribal flag at the Ionkwakiohkwaróron Tribal Administration Building has been lowered to half-staff. We extend our sincere and heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and others who knew our dear friend and colleague.
