A Voice from the Eastern Door
Cadets from Cornwall and area Army, Air, and Sea Cadet units visited the OPG Reconciliation Project (OPGRP) located at the Saunders Hydro Power Visitor Centre. The cadets toured the OPG facilities and gardens during their August 17th visit through the Cadets Activities program.
The Canadian Cadets is one of the most active cadet units in the Eastern Ontario Region, offering band, canoeing, range, exertion, flying, camping, day trips and many more fun activities. The Canadian Cadet Organization is a youth group provided through a partnership between the Canadian Department of National Defense and the respective Elemental Leagues for youths ages 12-18 with a focus on developing youth in the areas of leadership, citizenship, physical fitness and for air cadets, an interest in flying. The Cadets are sponsored by the Cornwall Kiwanis Club and Wing 424 of the Cornwall Royal Canadian Air Force Association.
The OPGRP is part of phase two of a long-term, sustainable landscape plan for the center, originally developed in 2012 by OPG, the City of Cornwall, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, and the Cornwall Horticultural Society.
The expanded area includes a Mother Earth and Tree of Peace feature, a medicine wheel, a culinary garden and a butterfly and herb garden populated with native wildflowers like purple coneflower and milkweed. The work was completed by local subcontractors, such as Akwesasne Earth Movers and Northern Landscapes with Northern Landscapes maintaining the OPGRP gardens.
