The A'nowara'ko:wa Arena was packed each day for back to back games against Orangeville Northmen on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon.
Saturday's game was a goal for a goal tensely played games. Orangeville scored the last period's first goal, but Thanaokatha Elijah scored his second to tie the game 8-8. Akwesasne fell behind again 9-8, when Daniel Mahoney's second goal tied it with under four minutes left.
Takaronhiotakie Thompson scored the first two goals of a wild first period, but by the end of the first period, Orangeville had tied it 4-4.
Thompson jumped out of the gate first in the second period and Maracle made it 6-4. The Northmen fought back to make it 7-7 going into the third period. Thanaokatha Elijah and Oneniotekowa Maracle each scored in OT for the win 11 to 9 over Orangeville.
Thunder outshot the Orangemen through all three periods with Goalie Sakaronhiotane Thompson stopping 49 of 58 shots to Orangeville's goalie Lucas Johnston 37 of 48.
By Sunday afternoon, the entire Thunder-Orangeman game was on another level. Gone was the back and forth, tense overtime play. The Thunder outplayed and outmaneuvered the Orangemen to a surprising, yet easy, victory over the Northmen 16 to 6.
Hawi Francis got the first of many goals for Akwesasne. Soon, the score shot up as Logan Sawyer, Francis, Elijah, Trysen Sunday, and Stone Chubb made it 12-5 after the second period.
In third period, Takaronhiotakie Thompson scored three times and Khyler Johnson shot one in to finish the third period.
"The boys didn't stop working. We played a full 60 minutes, so this is great, we are peaking at the right time," Raweras Mitchell said.
The Thunder plan to wrap up the best-of-five series at Game 3 in Orangeville on Friday. If needed, games 4 and 5 are also scheduled for Orangeville this coming weekend. The Colby Hancock Memorial Trophy will be handed out in Orangeville.
