SRMT Issues Release On St. Regis Bridge Work

The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe, on behalf of the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), is informing both travelers and Akwesasne community members of ongoing construction on the St. Regis River bridge. The work, carried out by Tuscarora Construction under contract with the NYSDOT, started this week.

Originally, the bridge project was planned for last year but due to poor weather conditions, it was postponed to this summer. The work involves the inspection and reinforcement of the bridge’s concrete footers. A stone causeway, used to access the site and divert water away from the footers, has been built from Sken:nen Park on Gray Street upstream.

The project is anticipated to last between eight to nine weeks and should not disrupt traffic. Should work need to be done on the roadway, the contractor will comply with all NYSDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Regulations to ensure traveler safety and ease of navigation.

During the construction, Sken:nen Park will be off-limits due to the presence of heavy machinery in the park and on the causeway. The public is advised to keep clear of the construction area for safety reasons.

Once the project is finished, Tuscarora Construction will restore any areas disrupted by the construction. The leftover causeway stone will then be handed over to the Tribe’s Planning and Infrastructure Division.
