Executive Director of Mohawk Council of Akwesasne

Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) is the elected community government of the Mohawk Community of Akwesasne. The Mohawk Council includes 12 District Chiefs and one Grand Chief who accept political responsibility for specific areas of Community work. They also participate in portfolio committees to achieve community goals. MCA Administration is the administrative arm of MCA responsible for Community services, infrastructure, and programs.

MCA is looking for an experienced candidate to take on the role of Executive Director. The Executive Director is the head of MCA Administration and is a visionary leader with knowledge and experience in organizational development, administration, change management, and governance who is ultimately responsible for the strategic management and implementation of short- and long-term plans, while creating and sustaining a “service focused” organizational culture.

The successful candidate will have a track record of success in leading large and complex First Nation government organizations. This success will have been demonstrated through results and an overall positive impact on the people of the organizations they have led. Reporting to the Grand Chief, the Executive Director will be a capable, energetic, and experienced leader who will foster teamwork and collaboration throughout MCA.

This is a full-time position located in the territory of the Mohawks of Akwesasne.

Job Requirements

The Executive Director reports to Council and is responsible for the leadership and management of MCA Administration, in accordance with the strategic direction and policies set by Council. The Executive Director is a leader with extensive experience in leading large complex public sector organizations and provides strategic leadership, workforce development, and ongoing direction and oversight of the delivery of community programs, infrastructure, and services.

The Executive Director provides leadership in making MCA Administration a self-sustaining and healthy workplace that is focused on providing excellent services to community members. The Executive Director promotes and supports teamwork and coordination among senior managers and between MCA departments, leads the development of government policies, procedures, and regulations, and oversees implementation and compliance monitoring.

Engaging communications with citizens and strong and positive relationships with government stakeholders, partners, and surrounding communities are necessary to advance Akwesasne’s interests and priorities, and overseeing the development and implementation of effective communications and stakeholder relations strategies is an important responsibility of the Executive Director.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in Business Administration with 7-10 years of management experience, including supervision or bachelor’s degree in a related business field with 10+ years of management experience, including supervision;

Experience in the management of programs/projects; administration, staff, program delivery, financial and human resource allocations; liaising with government officials, participating in committees affecting First Nations Governments

Valid driver’s license.

Demonstrated ability to:

manage First Nation resources including people, material assets, and money;

mentor, direct and develop managers and executives;

enforce policies and deliver difficult messages in a professional and constructive way;

manage major projects, change initiatives and other time-sensitive activities;

implement quality assurance programs that ensure service excellence;

establish and maintain management systems;

adapt and innovate in the face of change and crisis;

establish clear roles and responsibilities and to manage to those expectations;

communicate both orally and in writing, including accountability reporting and official communications;

accomplish results through others, inside and outside of the MCA Administration;

handle conflict situations using sound judgment and tactful communication;

receive, accept, and respond constructively to criticism; and

reflect on difficult situations and respond in a way that improves future performance.
