A Voice from the Eastern Door

Carey Terrance, First Akwesasronon Drafted Into The NHL Heads to Prospect Camp

The wait is over for Carey Terrance – the 18-year-old Akwesasronon will officially begin his NHL journey at the Ducks development camp. Terrance was drafted #59 overall (Round 2) to the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday, June 29th.

The Ducks announced the roster and dates for the club's annual Prospect Development Camp at Great Park Ice & FivePoint Arena in Irvine, Calif. The Prospect Camp will be held from Monday, July 3 through Friday, July 7.

Anaheim's Development Camp features 2023 second overall selection Leo Carlsson, all nine Ducks selections from 2023 NHL Draft and Anaheim's three 2022-23 OHL, QMJHL and WHL Defenseman of the Year winners. The 32-player roster includes 17 forwards, 11 defensemen and four goaltenders, highlighted by 27 Anaheim draft selections.

Anaheim's Development Camp will culminate with a 3-on-3 Scrimmage Friday, July 7 at 12 p.m. at FivePoint Arena at Great Park Ice. Fans are invited to arrive early to watch a full practice from 11:10-11:40 a.m. at both FivePoint Arena and Rink 3. Following the scrimmage, fans will have the opportunity to take part in a meet and greet, including photos and autographs, with all Ducks prospects in attendance inside FivePoint Arena on the upper concourse.

The five-day Development Camp will feature Ducks prospects participating in on-ice skating and skills, and off-ice strength and conditioning and leadership development sessions conducted by the organization's coaches and player development staff. Please note, the majority of the camp itinerary from July 3-6 consists of off-ice workouts, and skating and skills development on the ice (no traditional practices or scrimmages). Development Camp is open to the public and free of charge. Times will be posted by the club the day prior via AnaheimDucks.com and the club's official Twitter (@AnaheimDucks).

All nine of Anaheim's selections from the 2023 NHL Draft will participate in the camp, including Leo Carlsson (first round, second overall) Nico Myatovic (second round, 33rd overall), Carey Terrance (second round, 59th overall), Damian Clara (second round, 60th overall), Coulson Pitre (third round, 65th overall), Yegor Sidorov (third round, 85th overall), Konnor Smith (fourth round, 97th overall), Rodwin Dionicio (fifth round, 129th overall) and Vojtech Port (sixth round, 161st overall).

Terrance spoke with Indian Time, "I'm in Anaheim right now. I'm preparing for the upcoming Development Camp."

He added, "Ever since the U18 games, the support has been amazing. Even from people I don't know. Akwesasne held a parade for me then. I don't know what to expect when I go home. I do want to say just how much I appreciate all of your support. It means so much to me."

When asked about everything going on with media, photos interviews, Terrance said, When I get on the ice, it's my happy place. It's where I belong and do my best"

All Ducks prospects at camp will receive a personally tailored nutritional recommendation and be tested for strength thresholds, range of movement and aerobic capacity. Away from the rink, players will have opportunities to attend a cooking workshop and receive leadership training from new San Diego Gulls head coach Matt McIlvane.

Terrance is the second Mohawk player drafted by Anaheim, joining former defenseman Brandon Montour (second round, 55th overall in the 2014 NHL Draft), and according to the NHL, the ninth Mohawk Nation skater drafted in NHL history.

Six Indigenous players were chosen into the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, they include Carey Terrance (Mohawk), Carson Bjarnsaon (Metis), Garcyn Sawchyn (Metis), Jayden Perron (Metis) Jayson Shaugabay (Ojibwe), and Brett Hyland (Metis).
