A Voice from the Eastern Door

MCA Consulting Community On Use Of Tsi Karistisere/Dundee Settlement Funds

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Tsi karistisere/Dundee land claim was settled with Canada in 2018, with the Akwesasne community voting to accept the settlement offer of $239 million. It has since been determined that the funds will be allocated to a Trust. A Trust Agreement is currently being drafted.

According to the approved Tsi karistisere/Dundee settlement agreement, Section 3. – Management of Funds:

3.2: A priority for the use of the Compensation Balance is the purchase of land that will be

Acquired Land to be set apart as reserve land of the Mohawks of Akwesasne pursuant to Article 5.0.

3.3 Other priorities for the benefit of the Mohawks of Akwesasne shall be established by the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne after consultation with the Mohawks of Akwesasne and before the Compensation Balance is transferred to any entity as per Article 3.4.

The purchase of land is a requirement of the settlement agreement. Other funds from the settlement can be used for other priorities, determined by Council after consultation with the Mohawks of Akwesasne. Therefore, MCA is entering into the consultation phase with the community. Your input on how the funds should be prioritized is valuable and needed.

A series of consultation sessions are now scheduled, and we encourage the community to attend to provide input. Information will also be presented at these sessions on how the Trust is managed.
