A Voice from the Eastern Door
Hunter Biden, President Joe Biden’s son, has agreed to plead guilty to a pair of tax misdemeanors, and has reached an agreement with federal prosecutors to resolve a felony gun charge, the Justice Department announced in court documents on Tuesday.
The plea agreement will see the Justice Department recommending a probationary sentence for two instances of late tax payments in 2017 and 2018, according to insiders. It was reported that Hunter Biden was liable for at least $100,000 in federal taxes for each of those years but failed to make payments to the Internal Revenue Service within the prescribed deadlines.
The final decision regarding the sentence rests with a judge.
The plea arrangement will undoubtedly have a ripple effect on the 2024 presidential election. The case has already sparked a wave of political backlash from Republicans towards the Biden administration and the Justice Department, following the federal criminal indictment with 37 counts against Donald Trump for his alleged improper handling of classified documents. Trump, however, entered a not guilty plea last week.
The specifics of the charges were laid out in a criminal document submitted to the US District Court in Delaware. The ongoing investigation, conducted by US Attorney David Weiss, who was appointed by Trump, once examined potential money laundering and foreign lobbying accusations, among other possible charges.
“Hunter will take responsibility for two instances of misdemeanor failure to file tax payments when due pursuant to a plea agreement,” said Hunter Biden’s attorney Christopher Clark. “A firearm charge, which will be subject to a pretrial diversion agreement and will not be the subject of the plea agreement, will also be filed by the Government. I know Hunter believes it is important to take responsibility for these mistakes he made during a period of turmoil and addiction in his life. He looks forward to continuing his recovery and moving forward.”
The Justice Department confirmed on Tuesday that the investigation is still underway.
