By Isaac White.

On May 4th, 2023, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police (SRMT PD) reported a 'Swatting' incident at the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino and Resort (AMCR), leading to a full evacuation. Fortunately, no injuries or deaths occurred as the SRMT PD managed the situation. A press release from the SRMT PD stated that around 6:52 p.m., AMCR contacted them about a bomb threat against the casino. Another call, received by the Tribal Police at 6:57 p.m., reported gunshots at the Casino. The Tribal Police responded, took control of the scene, and thoroughly investigated the facilities with assistance from the New York State Police. Akwesasne Mohawk Ambulance was also present.

Following their investigation, SRMT PD determined there was no legitimate threat to anyone. In the press release, Tribal Police Chief Matthew Rourke praised the officers for their swift response and dedication to public safety. He also thanked the Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department, Akwesasne Mohawk Ambulance, Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe Emergency Management, and acknowledged the dangers of 'swatting calls.'

'Swatting' is a false report of a major crime, such as a hostage situation or active shooter, intended to send SWAT teams or law enforcement officers to a specific location. Documented cases have shown fatalities resulting from 'swatting' calls, posing significant risks to both the public and law enforcement.

Indian Time reached out to SRMT PD who stated that that there are no updates to the case yet. We will continue to keep the community updated.
