A Voice from the Eastern Door
FORT COVINGTON – On Tuesday, May 16, Salmon River Central School District residents will vote on a proposed spending plan for the 2023-24 school year.
Polls will be open from 12-8 p.m. in the Salmon River Central School Board Room, 637 County Route 1, Fort Covington. Voters should use door four to enter the building.
In addition to voting on the $36,886,087 budget proposal, residents will also vote on a $1.4 million proposition to purchase and finance school transportation vehicles, vote on a proposition that would allow a non-voting student representative to join the board of education and elect two members to the board of education.
The proposed budget calls for a spending increase of 9.7%, or $3,260,260, over the current year’s budget. District leaders are proposing a tax levy increase of 0%, or $0, which is greater than the state-imposed tax levy limit calculation. As a result, a super majority (60% plus one vote) is needed for the budget proposal to pass.
During the budget development process, the district’s administration worked closely with the board of education to effectively use the district’s revenue to address the pressing needs of students while also preserving academic programming.
The budget proposal closely aligns with the district’s key priorities and supports the critical work happening under its four essential pillars: Safe Environment, Cultural Diversity, Community Centered and Excellence in Academics and Lifelong Learning.
Individuals who are interested in voting on May 16 must be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen and a district resident for at least 30 days prior to the vote.
To obtain an absentee ballot, an application must be dropped off with the district clerk by May 15. Completed absentee ballots must be received by the district clerk by 5 p.m. on May 16. For more information about absentee ballots, residents should call 518-358-6614.
