The Executive Director is the key management leader of Akwesasronon Shonatatén:ron. The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the administration, programs and strategic plan of the organization. Other key duties include fundraising, marketing, and community outreach. The position reports directly to the Board of Directors.

The Akwesasronon Shonatatén:ron is a Survivor-led, trauma-informed organizations dedicated to uncovering, documenting, and sharing the truth about what happened to children removed from . The Secretariat creates opportunities for Survivors and intergenerational Survivors to share their statements to inform the truth in a culturally safe and trauma-informed way. The Secretariat reports to Survivors, leaders and community members on an ongoing basis and liaises with impacted First Nations by facilitating Nation to Nation dialogues. The Secretariat supports the creation of a community archive by collecting all related records from governments, churches and other institutions that were known to have been involved in the operations of the Mohawk Institute and oversees the work of the Police Taskforce and is conducting the ground search of over 600 acres.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Board Governance: Works with the Board of Directors to fulfill the organization’s Mandate.

Responsible for leading the Akwesasronon Shonatatén:ron in a manner that supports

and guides the organization’s Mandate as defined by the Board of Directors.

Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions.

Financial Performance and Viability: Develops resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the organization.

Responsible for fundraising and developing other revenues necessary to support the Akwesasronon Shonatatén:ron Mandate.

Responsible for the fiscal integrity of the Akwesasronon Shonatatén:ron, which includes providing the Board a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization.

Responsible for fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.

Organization Mandate and Strategy: Works with the Board and staff to ensure that the Mandate is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning and community outreach.

Responsible for the implementation of the Akwesasronon Shonatatén:ron programs

that carry out the organization’s Mandate.

Responsible for strategic planning to ensure that the Akwesasronon Shonatatén:ron can successfully fulfill its Mandate into the future.

Responsible for the enhancement of the Akwesasronon Shonatatén:ron profile by being active and visible in the community and by working closely with other professional, civic, governmental, and private organizations.

Organization Operations: Oversees and implements appropriate resources to ensure that the operations of the organization are appropriate.

Responsible for the hiring and retention of competent, qualified staff.

Responsible for the effective administration of the Akwesasronon Shonatatén:ron operations.

Responsible for signing all notes, agreements, and other instruments made and entered into and on behalf of the organization.

DAY TO DAY RESPONSIBILITES

Report to and work closely with the Board of Directors to seek their involvement in policy decisions, fundraising and to increase the overall visibility of the organization.

Supervise, and collaborate with organization staff.

Strategic planning and implementation.

Planning and operation of annual budget.

Serve as one of the Akwesasronon Shonatatén:ron primary spokesperson to the community, First Nation Leadership, the media and the general public.

Establish and maintain relationships with various organizations and utilize those relationships to strategically enhance the Akwesasronon Shonatatén:ron Mandate.

Engage in fundraising and securing of financial support from governmental and non- governmental agencies.

Oversee marketing and other communications efforts.

Establishing employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions and for the day-to-day operation of the organization.

Review and approve contracts for services.

Develop relationships with other agencies and service providers in the community to ensure culturally grounded mental health care and support is available to staff and survivors.

Other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS NEEDED

Post-Secondary Degree in Humanities, Public Administration, or another relevant field with several years of senior level management experience in the non-profit sector.

Organizational design and leadership skills with an ability to identify and develop talent through effective coaching, mentoring, and succession planning.

High level of business and financial acumen.

High level strategic thinking and planning skills in designing and developing programs and major projects.

Strong political acuity.

Demonstrated public speaking skills, including experience with news media.

Excellent time management skills, including a proven ability to prioritize workflow amid interruptions, and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

Demonstrated understanding of Indigenous protocols.

Demonstrated success in managing government and foundation relations, and fundraising.

High level of inert-personal skills and experience fostering a respectful and inclusive workplace.

Proven experience in providing support to a Board of Directors.

Knowledge of the history of the Indian Residential School System and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action.
