Akwesasronon Compete in St. Lawrence Marathon

CORNWALL – The St Lawrence Marathon returned this Saturday, April 29th with a sold-out field. Over 700 participants - the majority from outside of the region - will take part in the marathon, half-marathon, 10K and 5K runs.

The St. Lawrence Marathon is a certified Boston qualifier – as well as a half marathon, 10K and 5K runs along the beautiful Waterfront Trail.

"Our marathon course is one of the fastest Boston (Marathon) qualifiers in Canada," said marathon director Sebastian Warner.

Several Akwesasronon competed in Saturday's marathon including Karonhiotha, Konwahontsiawi and Kaientake Thompson competing in the 10K and Ienonhkwátsheriiostha running the 5k.

Troy Thompson competed in the 42.2 kilometer marathon, earning his tenth marathon medal.

Thompson said, "It was beautifully designed by Akwesasne's Victoria Ransom. It's amazing! The highlight of the day was crossing the line and Vienna (Troy's daughter) putting the medal around my neck. It was a magical moment."

Thompson will soon start training for his next marathon with the goal of running under 3 hours, 20 minutes to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Thompson is confident he'll reach his goal time and Akwesasne is cheering him on.
