A Voice from the Eastern Door
From St Regis Mohawk Schools 1st issue of "Echoes of St Regis" Year Book in June of 1949.
This first issue was dedicated to Mr. Loran Garrow (for his friendship and loyalty to the school) who is pictured here with his wife. He was the schools attendance officer for ten years.
Mr. Garrow is a firm believer in a good education. He said that his parents insisted on his daily attendance at school regardless of the hardships to be endured.
He told of one instance which occurred during his early days. Retold Here:
"It was the month of April thaws with ensuing cold nights, leaving a thin film of ice over the flats which he and his sister must cross on their way to school.
The two young children started to school scantily attired. Mr. Garrow remembers that he was clad in overalls, with no other clothing under them, and that he was barefoot. In his pocket was some dry johnnycake which was his noonday lunch.
When the sister and brother came to the thin ice he carried her on his back across the flats, often breaking through to the cold water with his bare feet."
Despite such hardships, Mr. Garrow attended school faithfully until he was sent to Philadelphia, Pa. to another school where he remained for six years.
Mr. Garrow commends our school very sincerely and says that today or children are very fortunate in having such a fine school.
