With the 2023 spring varsity lacrosse season officially underway, the Salmon River Shamrocks opened in strong form with a win against Plattsburgh. Meanwhile, the Massena Raiders earned an early-season win over Malone.
The ’Rocks beat Plattsburgh 14-8 on Saturday, April 1 in Clintonville.
Mason Cree and Tehokwirathe Barreiro each scored four goals to pace SRC. Their squadmate Sebastien Laughing tallied two goals and a helper. Taylor Mitchell netted a pair of goals. Alex Delormier scored a goal with one assist. Xavier Delormier guarded the Salmon River net, turning aside 15 shots.
Including the 2022 season, this is the Salmon River varsity boys’ 15th consecutive regular season win.
On Friday, March 31, the Massena boys lax team took a shutout win over the Franklin Academy Huskies. The final score was 18-0. The wide margin was likely due to starters and key players on the Huskies side who weren’t able to make the game. The weather conditions were also unusual for a lacrosse game, with cold temperatures and a field covered with light snow.
Trysen Sunday opened scoring, scoring all three of his goals in the first quarter, while assisting seven others throughout regulation. That aided in Massena’s 7-0 lead by the end of the opening stanza.
The Malone defense upped their game in the second frame, holding the Raiders to two goals in eight minutes. By halftime, Massena’s Connor Trimboli and Parker O’Neil pushed Massena to a 12-0 advantage.
By the final buzzer, 14 Massena players had scored at least one goal each.
In other Salmon River sports news, three Shamrocks boys varsity hockey players were named to the Hockey Coaches Association all-state team after reaching the NYSPHSAA Division II semifinals in March.
Senior forward Evan Collette and senior defenseman Luke Miller were awarded First Team honors. Senior forward Connor Dishaw earned an Honorable Mention. Head coach Tim Cook was honored as the Division II Coach of the Year.
“It’s humbling,” Cook told the Malone Telegram. “You always hope when you’re coaching that your teams are going to be successful, and everything doesn’t always go how you hope.
“When you get awards like this, it doesn’t happen all the time. The fact that the people that you work with, the people that you coach against, they say you’re one of the best coaches, it’s very humbling.”
