A Voice from the Eastern Door
New York State police are attempting to determine the identity of a person caught on surveillance footage who may have a connection to a homicide that occurred two weeks ago in St. Lawrence County. Other than declaring they want to identify and find the person, state police will not specify why they are looking for them.
The body of Ronald Durham, 72, a resident of Gouverneur, was discovered on February 11 with stab wounds to his neck at the East Side Cemetery on Van Buren Road in the village of Gouverneur. Frederick Wing, 22, a resident of Gouverneur, was taken into custody by the New York State Police and charged with murder in the second degree.
The person seen in the surveillance footage was observed on East Main Street in Gouverneur, on February 14, 2023, at two separate times. At around 1:51 in the morning, the subject was traveling westbound on East Main Street near the intersection of Clinton Street. At approximately 3:28 in the morning, the individual was traveling eastbound on East Main Street.
This person in the footage appears to be a male and is dressed in a white hooded sweatshirt and baseball cap. This person is riding what appears to be a BMX-style bike. The frame of the bicycle looks to be light-colored, with dark rims. In the picture taken at 3:28 in the morning, the person can be seen carrying a large, dark-colored duffel bag on their back.
Around 8:20 a.m. on Saturday February 11th, a person living close to the cemetery reported finding Durham's body. More than 40 years ago, Mr. Durham began working for the village's Department of Public Works. He resided in Gouverneur on Route 11. Wing resided on the same street as the cemetery where Mr. Durham's body was found. Wing is being held in St. Lawrence County Jail with no bail.
State Police requested that anyone in Gouverneur with video surveillance review their recordings from the early hours of February 14th. Anybody who recognizes the rider or the bike is urged to contact state police at 315-379-0012.
