The 2022-23 winter sports regular season is winding down and playoffs draw near. Recently, Massena downed Madrid-Waddington and Salmon River defeated Norwood-Norfolk. Salmon River boys hockey picked up wins against Ogdensburg and St. Lawrence Central.
Sunday, Feb. 5, girls basketball, Massena 46, Madrid-Waddington 34 – In the road win at Madrid, Madison LaDuke fashioned 14 points to lead the Raiders. Chyler Richards scored 11 points. For the Yellowjackets, Hailey Marcellus netted 10 points.
Sunday, Feb. 5, girls hockey, Adirondack United 7 Massena 0 – Goaltender Ava Reynolds made 12 saves for ADK in a Raiders home game at Massena. Lilliam Willis netted a hat trick.
Thursday, Feb. 2, girls basketball, Salmon River 40 Norwood-Norfolk 31 – Skyla Ransom led the Shamrocks on the floor with 14 points in a road win at Norwood. Kaidence Sunday scored 11 points. Taya Ransom netted another 10. For the Flyers, Caryn Perretta and Olivia Plonka scored nine points apiece.
Wednesday, Feb. 1, boys hockey, Salmon River 9 Ogdensburg 4 – Carter Johnson logged a hat trick with a helper to lead the ‘Rocks past the Blue Devils. Evan Collette tallied two goals and two assists. Kade Cook scored twice. Kahontiio Lazore and Chase Lewis both scored a goal with a helper. Caiden Cartier helped set up four scoring plays. Carsten Mitchell and Luke Miller had two assists each. Connor Dishaw fashioned a solo helper. Rick Chatland (28 saves) and Ethan Gibson (three saves) split goalie detail. Haydin McDonald, Jack Mills, Dylan Irvine and Tegan Frederick scored for OFA. Ty Jacobs turned aside 36 shots.
Wednesday, Feb. 1, girls basketball, Gouverneur 47, Massena 22 – Meghan Firnstein led the Raiders with 10 points in the home game at Massena. Meredith Bush scored 14 points for the Wildcats. Addy Conklin scored another 10.
Tuesday, Jan. 31, boys basketball, Potsdam 86 Salmon River 44 – Edward Jacobs led the Shamrocks with 15 points in the road game at Potsdam. Sebastien Laughing scored 14 points. Ian VanWagner scored 31 points for the Sandstoners. Theo Hughes scored 15 points while Tanner Rice netted 13.
Monday, Jan. 30, boys hockey, Salmon River 6 St. Lawrence Central 1 – The Shamrocks picked up a second consecutive win following their first loss of the 2022-23 season against the St. Lawrence Central Larries at Tri-Town Arena. Salmon River had the game clinched in the first period where they fired in four goals. That led into a scoreless middle stanza, followed by two more insurance goals for the ‘Rocks in the final frame. Connor Dishaw paced Salmon with a hat trick and an assist. Evan Collette scored once with two helpers. Chase Lewis, who had a solo assist, and Carter Johnson netted a singleton each. Luke Miller helped set up two scoring plays. Solo helpers came from Dylan Johnson, Wyatt Benedict and Caiden Cartier. Ethan Gibson covered their net, turning aside 13 shots. Gage Lamb scored from Charlie Dow in the third period for the Larries. Jace Dutch was their goalkeeper. He posted a 26-save performance.
Monday, Jan. 30, girls hockey, Malone 3 Canton 1 – At Tom Cavanaugh Arena in Akwesasne, the Shamrocks came back from a one-goal deficit. Two Salmon River seniors who have been skating with the Huskies, Chanel Thompson and Joryan Adams, were honored for playing with both the Franklin Academy and Salmon River girls hockey programs. Canton scored in the first period and held on to a the one-goal advantage until the second period. That’s when the Huskies scored a short-handed goal, then took the lead three minutes later. They fashioned an insurance marker during a third period power play. Claire Polnaik scored for the Golden Bears unassisted. The tying goal came off the stick of Val St. Hilaire, also unassisted. Kimora Swamp scored the next two goals for FA. The game-winner came at 7:21 in the third with helpers from Olivia LaFlesh and Whitney St. Hilaire. Swamp’s second goal was assisted by Olivia Cook and Alyx St. Hilaire. Malone’s goaltender, seventh-grader Reaghan Marlow, made 19 saves. Myrah Bullock backstopped for Canton, turning aside 29 shots.
Monday, Jan. 30, girls basketball, Canton 43 Massena 35 – Chyler Richards paced the Raiders offense in the road game at Canton. For the Golden Bears, Ava Hoy scored 20 points and Olivia White tossed in another 14 points.
Saturday, Jan. 28, girls basketball, Potsdam 49 Salmon River 28 – The Sandstoners went out to an 11-2 lead after the first quarter and didn’t let go for the remainder of the game. Kaidence Sunday paced the SRC offense with 11 points. Skyla Ransom netted nine points. Taya Ransom scored six points. Ariyah LaFrance tallied two points. For Potsdam, Tati’ana Burks-Carista had a game-high 16 points. Salwa Hmyene scored 13 points. Jaidan Andrews netted nine points. Lola Buckley pitched in three points. Emma Brosell, Mattie Lomogolio, Hailey Richards and Julia VanWagner tallied two points each.
Saturday, Jan. 28, boys hockey, Salmon River 9 Thousand Islands 4 – TI started the game ahead by a goal, but the Shamrocks quickly scored two goals to get ahead 2-1 during the first period. They came back to punch in three more in the second, and four more in the closing frame. Chase Lewis scored the eventual game-winning goal on a play set up by Kahontiio Lazore. Evan Collette sparked the Shamrocks offense with four goals. Carter Johnson scored twice. Lewis, Canyon Laughing and Bronson Bero scored a goal each. Lazore, Connor Dishaw and Dylan Johnson fashioned two assists each. Lewis, Caiden Cartier, Kade Cook and Carter Jackson recorded solo helpers. Rick Chatland made 23 saves. Mason Savage scored two goals for the Islanders. Morgan Fox had a goal with two helpers. Ray Peters rounded out the TI scoring.
Friday, Jan. 27 boys hockey, Canisius 6 Salmon River 4 – After the Shamrocks gained a 4-3 lead halfway through the third period, the Crusaders scored three consecutive goals to hand SRC their first loss of the season. Evan Collette led the Shamrocks with a goal and two assists. Connor Dishaw, who also had one assist, Carter Johnson and Chase Lewis scored respective solo markers. Luke Miller and Kade Cook each tallied one assist. Rick Chatland turned aside 23 scoring tries. Petros Kollidas, Joseph Maynoski, Max Mathien, Tommy Stofer, Luke Daigler and Eli Noble scored for Canisius. Braeden Gryzbak made 35 saves.
Thursday, Jan. 26, girls basketball, Massena 73 Salmon River 8 – Madison LaDuke scored a game-high 25 points in the home win for the Raiders in Massena. Chyler Richards tallied 11 points.
Monday, Jan. 23, boys hockey, Salmon River 5 Beekmantown 4 – The Shamrocks took an overtime victory against the Eagles at Ronald B. Stafford Arena at SUNY Plattsburgh. Salmon River scored three goals in the first period, holding a 3-1 lead going into the second. Both teams quickly scored in the middle frame, with Salmon River leading 4-2 going into the third period. Beekmantown scored twice in the third to force overtime. After Kahontiio Lazore made a body save while the net was empty, denying the Eagles a game-winner, Kade Cook took the game for the ‘Rocks 1:54 into OT. Chatland ended the game with 33 saves. Cook also contributed a pair of powerplay goals and one helper. Connor Dishaw scored twice with one assist. Carter Johnson scored once. Evan Collette tallied two assists. Chase Lewis logged a solo helper. Zach Lapier scored a hat trick for Beekmantown, with one assist. Sam Bingel made two assists. Austin Doser made 30 saves.
