WALTER JOHN OAKES

ST. REGIS – Walter J. Oakes, 66, of 146 Hilltop Drive, passed away on Saturday, December 17, 2022, at the Cornwall Community Hospital.

Walter was born on November 22, 1956, in Cornwall, ON, son of the late John and Isabelle (Stady) Oakes. He was a graduate of General Vanier High School. He also graduated from Algonquin College Ottawa, and St. Lawrence College with studies in child psychology.

Walter was an Ironworker with Local #711 Montreal. He was an avid lacrosse player in the 70's and was inducted into the Akwesasne Lacrosse Hall of Fame. He liked reading the dictionary, watching movies, Tuesday night Bingo, playing cards, and listening to music. Always one to enjoy visiting with friends and family, his greatest joys came from spending time with his children.

He is survived by his children Melissa Oakes of Cornwall Island; Mike (Sheri) Jacobs of Snye; Nathaniel Jacobs of St. Regis; and Brett White of Cornwall Island; four grandchildren, Amelia, Chenel, Bailey and Sage; his sister Lorraine Oakes, and three brothers Joseph, James and Victor Oakes, all of Akwesasne; and a special niece, Danielle Oakes of Akwesasne

Besides his parents John and Isabelle, Walt was predeceased by his siblings John Michael, Enos, Roy, Angus, Jackie, Mary Jane and Christine; two nephews Teddy and Joseph Porter; and one great nephew Jazzy Jacobs.

Friends called at the Donaldson Funeral Home where a funeral service was held with Pastor Lisa Jock officiating.
