The Salmon River Shamrocks boys basketball team opened the 2022-23 season on a high note, winning their second consecutive Frazier Classic Championship in St. Regis Falls over the weekend of Nov. 26-27.
The ‘Rocks beat Parishville-Hopkinton 46-38 in the Saturday championship, hosted by the St. Regis Falls Saints and sponsored by the Saints Booster Club. Salmon River earned their way into to the title game after downing Brushton-Moira 53-32 in the Friday opening bout.
P-H got into the championship tilt with a 35-27 win against St. Regis Falls. Brushton-Moira against St. Regis Falls by a 45-27 final score.
In the championship game, Salmon River came back after trailing in the first quarter to claim an eventual victory.
P-H started at an 8-3 advantage just before the halfway mark of the first quarter, then fell behind as the Shamrocks offense went on a 16-0 run. They led after the first quarter 12-8 and 19-8 at the two-minute mark in the second quarter. The scoreboard read 28-15 Salmon at halftime.
Parishville-Hopkinton reduced their deficit to six points, outscoring Salmon River 17-10 in the third frame.
Salmon River regained control of the game in the last eight minutes to earn their second Frazier title.
The Shamrocks’ Sebastien Laughing, who was named tournament MVP, sparked his team’s offense with 18 points, a game high, sinking five from the three-point line. Edward Jacobs II scored 11 points and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Taharihwakohe Lazore scored nine points, including two three-pointers. Brody Lebehn scored four points. Landon David and Ty Leroux netted two points apiece.
For P-H, Eric Foster scored 11 points, including three from the three-point line. Jon Snell scored 10 points. Jake Johnson tallied seven points and was also named to the All-Tournament Team.
After falling behind 11-7 in the first quarter during the Friday game, Salmon River later found their footing to take a 53-32 win against the Brushton-Moira Panthers.
SRC scored 20 points in the second stanza to gain a 27-18 lead at halftime.
They ratcheted their lead to 40-26 after the third quarter, with the Salmon defense in the closing frame holding the Panthers to six points.
Laughing paced the Salmon River offense with 18 points. David nailed four three-pointers for 12 points. Jacobs fashioned 10 points. Lazore tallied nine points. Lebehn and Leroux scored two points each.
Kasey Martin led Brushton-Moira with 11 points. Sauve scored 10 and Anthony Jiang netted four points. Jock scored three points. Gage Halavin and Jacob LaSalle each hit a free throw.
In other boys basketball action from that weekend, Massena won two games to take the Saranac Central tournament. The Raiders beat hosts Saranac Central 70-40 on Friday. They downed Northeast Clinton 61-44 in the Saturday game where Taylor Mitchell scored 22 points and Colin Patterson tallied 19 points.
