A Voice from the Eastern Door
Dubinsky was a great friend of the Akwesasne Freedom School
Professor Ed Dubinsky died on May 8 at his home in Miami, Florida. He was a great friend of the Akwesasne Freedom School providing instruction in mathematics during the first two years of its formation in 1979-80. He was an advocate for human and ecological rights and a staunch defender of the Mohawk Nation and its people. He served as a professor of mathematics at Clarkson University and at many other institutions. He was also an ecologist who turned a section of hardscrabble land in Pyrites, NY into a healthy forest, providing a sanctuary for many species of wildlife. His home on North Woods Road was a learning center as well when Ed hosted summer retreats to discuss the sciences of physics and mathematics. He had taken an active role in promoting civil rights for black Americans in the segregated south during the turbulent-and dangerous-1960’s. Fired from one university for his activism Ed would not be deterred from addressing issues of importance to his life values. A teacher of renown, he was compassionate towards anyone in need.
Ed is predeceased by his parents, his sister, Rita R. Poore and nephew, Robert ‘Bob’ Poore.
He is survived by his partner, Jennie Dautermann, and his three daughters: Malgosia and husband Mike Atkinson, Hania Dubinsky, Ewa Dubinsky; and two grandchildren, Zachary and Camryn Atkinson; niece, Lori DiGiacinto, nephews, Barry and Scott Poore, close family friend, Jayne George and best friend, Matt “Flukie” Suarez; and several great nieces and their families.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 265 Northwoods Road, Hermon, New York 13652. at 12PM on October 22. The family would be honored to host his many Akwesasronon friends.
