National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

Local law enforcement agencies have combined their resources to host National Prescription Drug Take Back Day (NPDTBD). Akwesasne’s NPDTBD will be held this Saturday April 30, 2022 from 10:00 AM-2:00 PM at the following locations: St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police Station, Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service in Kana:takon, Tsi Snaihne Substation, and the parking area across from the Peace Tree Trade Mall. Naloxone training sessions will also be held at SRMT Police Station and the sub-station in Snye.

Each location is ready to accept unused or unneeded medication in the form of tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of medications, for safe disposal.

Many people have unused or expired medications at home. It is important to know when you should get rid of the unused medicine and how to dispose of it properly. Disposing of medicine safely prevents others from using them accidentally or intentionally. It also prevents chemicals from getting into the environment, like drinking water.

When to get rid of medicine:

• Your healthcare provider changes your prescription, but you still have some medicine left

• You feel better, and your provider says you should stop taking the medicine

• You have over the counter medicine you no longer need

• You have medicine past its expiration date

Do not take expired medication. They may not be as effective, or the ingredients of the medicine may have changed, making them unsafe to use. Storing expired or unwanted medicine can increase the risk of:

• Taking the wrong medicine due to mix-ups

• Accidental poisoning in children or pets

• Overdose

• Misuse

Therefore, instead of storing expired medication, flushing it down the toilet, or throwing it into the trash, bring unwanted or expired medication to a Take Back Day event to be properly discarded. Medication Take Back Day provides Akwesasne with an easy and safe way to get rid of their medications, helping protect homes, the environment, and loved ones.

Kinney Drugs also accepts unused or unwanted medication. They host a Medicine Collection Day the last Saturday of each month. They will accept all unwanted non-controlled prescriptions and over the-counter-medications. Simply bring them to any Kinney Pharmacy during regular pharmacy hours and they will dispose of them safely. They cannot accept controlled prescriptions, illegal drugs, or needles/sharps.
