A Voice from the Eastern Door
Spring sports are underway, and the Salmon River Shamrocks and Massena Raiders have played their first lacrosse and baseball games of 2022.
Salmon River girls lacrosse started their season with a 16-3 road win over the Potsdam Sandstoners on Saturday, April 9. Winter Jock led the ‘Rocks with five goals. Joryan Adams punched in the game’s opening marker with 24:14 left on the clock in the first half on a play set up by Jock. Adams ended up tallying our goals and two assists. Jianna Lazore scored four times. Azalea Lazore, a seventh grader, scored at 17:33 in the first half after getting the ball from Ariyah LaFrance.
Emma Fields paced the Potsdam offense with a goal and two assists.
The Salmon River boys also opened their season with a win, 13-5 over the Ogdensburg Free Academy Blue Devils. Kyden Burns netted five goals, which included the first four of the game. Hawi Francis scored three goals with a helper. Kade Herne fashioned a trio of assists. Alexander Delormier, Crayton Cree (1 assist), Ethan Seymour, Logan Thompson, Warren Oakes (1 assist) and Andyn Bero (1 assist) all netted singletons.
OFA’s Drew Costello and Dylan Irvine scored a pair of goals apiece. Chase Jacobs scored once and Tegan Frederick helped set up one play.
Shamrock goalies Sakaronhiotane Thompson and Xavier Delormier turned aside a combined 12 shots. OFA netminder Alex Worden made 10 saves.
That same day, Massena boys lacrosse fell to the Canton Golden Bears in a 14-3 game. Trysten Sunday scored two of the Raiders’ goals. Cade Chezum and Nolan Bombard both scored three times for Canton. Michael Schwartfigure and Oliver Johnson pitched in two goals each.
In baseball action on Wednesday, April 6, Salmon River pitchers Caiden Cartier and Kade Cook threw a combined no-hitter against Massena, their first win on the season.
Cartier struck out 17 batters. Due to pitch count constraints, he was lifted prior to the Red Raiders’ final batter. Cook finished the game and upheld the no-hitter.
Cartier scored the game-winning run in the second inning, after being walked at the bat and then stealing second base. Bronson Bero got a key hit after another three batters. A Massena error sent Cartier to home plate, the only run of the tilt.
The previous afternoon, the Shamrocks lost their opening game of the season 12-1 to Beekmantown in a road game. Dylan Johnson, tagged with the loss, scored the only SRC run of the game in the sixth inning. The Eagles scored in every inning, except the second.
The Shamrocks were able to produce just one hit, a single in the second inning off the bat of Luke Miller. Rick Chatland was walked three times. Salmon’s starter pitcher was Chase Lewis, who allowed four earned runs while walking three batters and sitting down two.
