Salmon River knocked out of state quarterfinals in razor-thin loss to Starpoint

FORT COVINGTON – The Salmon River Shamrocks were knocked out of the state hockey tournament in a nail biter 5-4 double overtime game against the Starpoint Spartans at Tom Cavanaugh Arena.

With the game tied 4-4 in the second overtime, the Spartans' Will Mainstone got the puck into the Shamrocks net with just 25.3 seconds left on the clock. Salmon River goalie Rick Chatland stood tall between the pipes with 43 saves. Starpoint's Rich Gareau turned aside 33 shots.

The game opened with Salmon River scoring two goals in the first 17 minutes of the tilt. The Spartans later tied up the game with a pair of two-goal bursts.

Ethan Moulton, in his final hockey game as a Shamrock, scored twice. Kade Cook tallied two assists. Chase Lewis fashioned one goal and one helper.

Mainstone had two goals and an assist. His squadmate Justin Bull scored twice. Alec Kirk and Cameron Agro helped set up two goals apiece.

After scoring twice in the second period, Spartans at the end of the third period managed to kill off a power play for Salmon River, after a Starpoint skater was cited for roughing.

Mainstone's first goal of the game happened with 14:34 left in regulation. With 10:53 in the third, Starpoint's Bull tied the game, 4-4.

Salmon River attackers were silenced in both the third stanza and overtime, after preventing any Starpoint scoring in the second period.

Bolstered by 13 second-period saves from Chatland, Salmon River's defense killed off their only power play disadvantage and held a 4-2 lead going into the final 17 minutes of regulation.

Salmon River's first two goals of the game in the first period came from Caiden Cartier and a penalty shot goal from Lewis.

With 3:15 left in the opening frame, Moulton shut down a two-goal Starpoint scoring run that put the Shamrocks ahead 3-2. A solid Shamrocks forecheck in the second held the Spartans scoreless for the frame.

Salmon River has six players graduating in June – Moulton, Evan White, Crayton Cree, Tehanerahtaiens Barnes, Eystn Wylie and Kahentaienni Thompson. As many as 13 juniors can come back as seniors for the 2022-23 season.
