Shamrocks, Raiders earn several wins for first games of 2022

Massena and Salmon River pulled off wins in some of their first games of the new year. Here’s a summary of their recent victories:

Friday, Jan. 7 girls basketball, Massena 52, Plattsburgh 28 – Tori Jacobs fashioned 12 points for a home court win. Her squadmate Faith Halladay also netted a dozen points. Meghan Firnstein scored 11 points.

Friday, Jan. 7 boys basketball, Massena 80, Potsdam 59 – Colin Patterson scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Raiders in a road win. His teammate Luke Greco added 18 points. Jake Firnstein and DeShawn Walton scored 16 points each. For Potsdam, Ansen Herrick scored 18 points, while Ian VanWagner and Theo Hughes each tossed in 13 points.

Wednesday, Jan. 5 wrestling Massena 36, Canton 35 – Nathan Rourke earned a pinfall win at 215 lbs., while Colden Hardy pinned an opponent at 145 lbs., and Rocco Ferriero did the same at 152 lbs.

Wednesday, Jan. 5 boys hockey, Salmon River 6, St. Lawrence Central 2 – The ‘Rocks scored all the goals they would need in the first two stanzas. Salmon goalie Rick Chatland turned aside 14 Larries scoring attempts. Evan Collette netted a hat trick with a helper. Caiden Cartier helped set up three plays, and Chase Lewis tallied a pair of assists. Kade Cook and Ethan Moulton both scored a goal with an assist. SLC netminder Zach Strawser had a 36-save performance.

Tuesday, Jan. 4 girls hockey Malone/Salmon River 5, Canton 3 – Salmon River skaters under the Franklin Academy banner played key roles in securing the win over the Golden Bears. Olivia Cook scored a pair of goals, including one with 13:55 left in the game that would hold up as the game-winner. Cook had also tied the game in the second period on a play set up by Val St. Hilaire. Tatum Cook-Francis netted the insurance marker with 8:54 left, unassisted. The Huskies outshot the Golden Bears 26-20. Franklin Academy had suffered off a 5-1 loss to Massena the previous Thursday.
