With the 2021-2022 winter season well underway, here is a wrap of recent Salmon River Shamrocks and Massena Raiders basketball and hockey highlights:
Salmon River 8, Rockland 0 (girls hockey Saturday, Dec. 11) – Playing host to five Salmon River skaters for the 2021-22 season, the Huskies/Shamrocks outshot the competition 47-7 en route to the win on their home ice in Fort Covington. Huskies goalie Gina Norcross turned aside seven shots. Rockland’s Marina Capone tallied 39 saves. Taytum Cook-Francis scored two goals and helped set up another. Anna Monette scored twice. Olivia Laflesh scored a goal with a pair of assists.
Massena 29, Indian River 52 (boys basketball Saturday, Dec. 11) – Colin Patterson anchored the Massena offense with 10 points as Mike Frimpong paced Indian River with 17 points. Trailing by two points at halftime, the Raiders were outscored 19-2 in the third quarter.
Salmon River 9, Tupper Lake 2 (boys hockey Saturday, Dec. 11) – Tehanerahtaiens Barnes made 22 saves and Caiden Cartier scored three times and assisted once. Evan Collette, Carter Johnson, Chase Lewis, and Kade Cook each fashioned a pair of helpers. TL goalie Jamin Whitmore denied 55 scoring attempts.
Salmon River 7, Thousand Island 4 (boys hockey Friday, Dec. 10) – Evan Collette scored twice, while Kade Cook and Eystn Wiley each fashioned a goal and an assist. The Shamrocks broke out to an earlier 5-0 lead anchored by netminder Crayton Cree’s 25 saves. Ethan Moulton and Carter Johnson netted respective singletons. Nathanial Brundige blocked 44 shots for Thousand Islands.
Salmon River 33, Potsdam 42 (girls basketball Thursday, Dec. 9) – Lindsey Martin set the offensive pace for SRC with 16 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Kaidance Sunday tallied 11 points, 11 rebounds and three steals. Cathryn Todd tallied 15 points and Kate Davis scored 11 points for the Sandstoners. Mia Leroux fashioned nine rebounds.
Massena 32, Malone 54 (boys basketball Tuesday, Dec. 7) – Taylor Mitchell scored 13 points to anchor the Massena offense on the road in Malone. Evan Miller and Jace Hammond each scored 11 points for FA.
Salmon River 38, St. Lawrence Central 56 (boys basketball Tuesday, Dec. 7) – Hawi Cook-Francis had a good night on the floor with 21 points. Jayden Ashley paced Brasher with 23 points.
Massena 6, Canton 0 (girls hockey Tuesday, Dec. 7) – Brooke Terry scored four goals on the way to a shutout home win. Sophia Prentice tallied a goal with two helpers. Joie-Lynn Jabut posted a goal and an assist.
Salmon River 4, Malone 3 OT (boys hockey Tuesday, Dec. 7) – Caiden Cartier netted the game-winning goal 2:07 into overtime to clinch the road victory. Luke Miller assisted. Rick Chatland made 23 saves, as Malone’s Jeremiah Scharf turned aside 37 shots. SRC’s Evan Collette scored once in the middle stanza, assisted by Carter Mitchell.
Massena 59, Potsdam 22 (girls basketball Tuesday Dec. 7) – Tori Jacobs led the Massena offense with 14 points. Joey Abrantes recorded 11 points. Tati’ana Burks-Carista paced Potsdam with seven points.
Salmon River 28, Potsdam 55 (boys basketball Tuesday, Dec. 7) – Edward Jacobs led the Shamrocks offense with 12 points as Ian VanWagner scored a game-high 28 for Potsdam.
Salmon River 26, St. Lawrence Central 59 (girls basketball Monday, Dec. 6) – Lindsay Martin led Shamrocks players with 10 points. Brionna Foster netted 13 for St. Lawrence.
Massena 44, Malone 32 (girls basketball Monday, Dec. 6) – Meghan Firnstein sparked the Massena offense with 10 points.
Salmon River 26, St. Lawrence 57 (girls basketball Monday, Dec. 6) – Lindsay Martin posted 10 points, three boards and three steals for the Shamrocks, as Skyla Ransom fashioned eight points, nine caroms and eight blocks.
Massena 44, Malone 32 (girls basketball Monday, Dec. 6) – Chloe Labelle led all Massena scorers with 10 points. Mackenzie Lane posted 13 points for Franklin Academy.
Massena 11, Beekmantown 2 (girls hockey Friday, Dec. 3) – Brooke Terry led Massena with six goals. Sophia Prentice netted one goal and three helpers.
Massena 48, Norwood-Norfolk 18 (girls basketball Wednesday, Dec. 1) – Tori Jacobs and Chase Gladding each netted a dozen points in the Miranda Vari Tournament championship bout in Norwood.
Salmon River 48, Tupper Lake 17 (girls basketball Wednesday, Dec. 1) – Lindsay Martin set the offensive pace with 14 points as the Shamrocks built a 14-0 lead after the first quarter and 29-4 at the half. Skyla Ransom scored 10 points, Mia Leroux scored eight and six points came from Ioseriio Tabor.
Salmon River 19, Colton-Pierrepoint 46 (girls basketball Tuesday, Nov. 30) – Lindsay Martin led the offensive efforts with 11 points while taking five rebounds and three steals. Skyla Ransom grabbed eight caroms and blocked a shot.
Salmon River girls hockey will merge with Malone – After fielding only five players for the season, they will merge with the Franklin Academy Huskies for the 2021-2022 season. Shamrocks who have joined the merged team are Lindsey Durant, Kimora Swamp, Taytum Cook-Francis, Chloe Cook and Koral Thompson, along with Olivia Cook from Chateaugay Central. “We should be very competitive, I would say,” Franklin Academy assistant coach Craig St. Hilaire told nny360.com. “The core group of girls who have been playing in Malone ... have been here for a long time. Most of them are sophomores and juniors, so, our girls ... we’re kind of hoping this is the season for ‘em. They’re very seasoned. Most of them (have been) playing since they were seventh graders.”
